OR - if you're someone like me and has lived a life of cringe far higher than normal, then Tomoko makes you feel like you're not alone.

I practically look at her like the patron saint of cringe.

Tomoko was the first character I encountered who I found highly relatable. Before she existed/I knew about her the closest was probably Shinji Ikari.

I watched the whole anime despite the cringe and bought the blu ray, but I never been able to finish a single episode since. Go figure.

I really prefer the manga now, the current storyline is pretty funny. Yen press is taking its time putting out the next volume though.

I'm a little baffled at the idea Watamote is supposed to be about otaku, it seems plain as day to be about a person with an anxiety disorder.
Not all anime fans have social phobias, many probably have the opposite.

I had to pause a lot to cringe, but very funny and worthwhile.

Sometimes when this series comes up, I feel like I'm in the middle of a discussion about a totally different series than what everyone else is talking about.

All the people who feel sorry for her, or relate to her social anxiety aren't looking at the whole picture of the series here. Which is that behind everything else, she's kind of a horrible, rotten, egomaniac of a person. Her shyness is kind of her only saving grace because if she were more open with people she'd probably be legitimately ostracized. I mean, blaming other people for her problems is in the title of the show itself!

That's the whole joke, and if all you're seeing is the "cringey" stuff at the surface. Or going into it with preconceived notions based on your own issues, then I think some aspects of the series may be getting a bit misjudged. It's just a comedy after all.

Mmm, it's probably inevitable when one's entire frame of reference is his or herself. The personality defects could be the result of the underlying disorder.

I was just thinking Tomoko reminds me alot of George Costanza with the comically self-serving aspects. Like cheating on card games with kids to feel like a bigshot, seems like a total Costanza move.

I love Tomoko because she is one of the few characters who's thoughts and actions don't align at all. For the majority of fictional characters inner and outer are in sync. Also Watamote is one of the few anime where they didn't cut the thought processes out in the adaptation; a sin way too many anime commit. We only see their actions and words and hardly ever their thoughts. As much as Tomoko loves to bitch her honest actions betray her and make her incredibly cute (and make us cringe).

I remember the show being extremely cringeworthy. I just felt so embarrassed for her, that it really hurt. If there's something this show did well, it's making me feel empathetic. Ugh. Will not rewatch.

But the opening was amazing.
