If someone is judged as needing rehabilitation, how does giving money change this?
If their crime was trying to bribe an officer, would they be allowed to buy their way out?

Bail has some incentive attached to it and it's a temporary situation. When you bribe someone your money is gone. You've exchanged it for something.

With bail, the idea is that you'll get the money back if you hold up your end of things (show up in court). Often the bail money isn't even your own. You've borrowed it--so the folks you borrowed from also have an incentive to do what they can to ensure you show up so they don't lose their money.

Now, it's true that you could "jump bail" and I guess that might look like you just paid a bribe. But with an "honest bribe" once you've paid it, you expect the other person to call things settled (I guess reality might be different). But if you jump bail, you're definitely not in the clear. If someone tracks you down, you're still in trouble, and in fact you are in more trouble.

In the old medieval days, once you were caught, "Gaol" was not punishment, it was a place to KEEP you from leaving town until your trial, where you might receive your punishment then.
For a few coins to the jailer, you might be allowed a better cell and some better meals, but the point was, at least they had their eye on you and knew where you were.

Later on, for a few more monetary contributions, someone who knew you said it was okay to let you out until the trial, so long as they promised to keep an eye on you and prevent you from leaving town. And the tradition continues to this day.
