I'm all ready to go as the first episode is now up.

Episode 1

Looks very nice as typical of P.A. Works. So there's a small band at a school, a far cry from that in Sound! Euphonium, and there's a musical piece written in blood on Chika's first day as a band member. Chika had been practicing to be a volleyball player, but she opts to play the flute instead seeing that she just begin to pick up the instrument. So they solve the riddle as some sort of love letter towards Mr. Kusakabe seeing that he's quite an accomplished musician. Chika sure is full of energy seeing that she's always wanting to practice, whether it be for volleyball or on the flute. This show is off to a solid start, and certainly it looks like it will be good. Next time, Miyoko joins.

Are we sure that this isn't a harem show with sensei as the protagonist?

Episode 1

Chika thinks she's a "cute girl,"lol no. Her designs are so unappealing (actually all the characters' design are pretty ugly).

Probably the most inconsistently animated first episode made by P.A. Works. If it's a still frame with little movement it's fine, but when the movement is slightly larger or at a distance it just becomes very awkward, and some of the backgrounds are more distracting than I would expect from a first episode.Starting to think this might just be a side project of sorts for PA Works since they're likely prioritizing Kuromukuro instead.

Very unimpressive start which is saying alot considering almost all of PA Works shows hook me in from the very start (with the exception of Glasslip and RDG).Won't put it on Glasslip's level of bad so far but definitely see this being mediocre like RDG.

Did Funimation really call a bass tuba an euphonium? She even said bass tuba in English, so how on earth do you translate that to euphonium?

If you're gonna do something professionally, at least edit it.

Yaoi intensifies!

Also, what a good way to profess your love to your teacher. Painting on the chalkboard and making extra work for him.

I like a good music anime, and based on this opening episode, I feel like this is going to be an unexpected favourite of the season for me... even if I'm expecting it. Pretty much the first time I saw her I found Chika's design... strange. I mean, those have to be the eyes of a witch or something. Even if can't quite get the personality down, if nothing else, she's got the look of a cute girl going for her... I'm not sure how well the mystery element of the show will be implemented, because I'm concerned that it might just detract from what would otherwise be a fairly solid music anime. I hope I'm wrong about that, and if the mysteries make it twice as good, then swell. Anyway, this does look promising.

Episode 1

This thread isn't gaining much traffic is it?

Anyways it was a chill first episode. I'm not going crazy over this atm, but after how much I loved Sound Euphonium, I'm definitely giving this one a chance. I didn't even start liking Euphonium until episode 5 or 6 so let's see if this can turn into something interesting.

I hope the mystery becomes more prominent, I don't want lackluster mysteries that are solved in one episode every time they're presented like Beautiful Bones.

And Haruta is gay and was pretty open about it too. Ok. Alright. Definitely didn't see that one coming. I don't like the teacher-student love shit because it never goes anywhere, Euphonium has that too which was annoying, but bearable. The romance will never go anywhere at this rate. Maybe the two main characters will start to fall in love over the course of the anime, we'll just have to see. But for a show that has the romance tag, I really don't see it being that much of a plot point, it seems more tacked on than anything.

Euphonium had romance and it was really well played, but I don't see the romance in this one holding up to that.

I do like Chika, she seems fun.

Also the animation is solid as always from PA Works. Kyoani really brought out the big guns for Euphonium, but PA Works is holding their own as well. This isn't their best, but PA Works's animation is good even when they're average. Kyoani did a really good job with the facial expressions and lip movements of when the characters were blowing into their instruments, I can tell PA Works is lacking in that area.

Episode 1: Melodious Cipher

Wait. What? That is one unique love triangle. I mean a very one sided love triangle. Can it really be considered love though or rather admiration? I'll convince myself is admiration rather than making babies type of love.

Hmm so I wonder if they are going to recruit people into the band club by solving mysteries. Wondering if it will be more mystery based rather than music based. Or they are going to use the premise of music as a basis for the mysteries like in this episode. Pretty good.

I'm liking the character designs and the music is pretty good so far too. Chika is the only entertaining one so far though everyone else is pretty dry. But the journey has just begun, their personalities will get fleshed out soon.

So far, its pretty unique in its premise and how they implemented music and mysteries. But other than that I'll still look forward to the next one.

I had the exact same reaction Chika

10 posts on the first episode within a few hours of it airing. I'd say that isn't too bad.

I'd disagree. This is pretty spotty for a P.A. Works production. That opening shot alone was absolutely horrible. A few minor hickups during the rest of the episode as well and even the better parts were decent at best. It's not exactly bad when you compare it to most of what is currently coming out, but I was expecting much better from P.A.. I assume that they have their B-team working on this.

Funny that you mentioned Euphonium that much during your post, I can see why, but I was actually thinking more of a different KyoAni production during the episode, that particular one being Hyouka. At least the way they went about solving the mystery felt a little similar. Maybe it's because Haru could easily fit in with the cast of Hyouka. Well, he'd be a bit too sexually aggressive for that, but you get my point

This isn't a triangle. I didn't see anything suggesting Haru and Chika like each other romantically.

Just wait for the Glasses girls to show up and add another dimension to it.

Love the eyes in this show. That said, I got the Hyouka vibes, too. It went above and beyond what a normal person would insinuate from the mystery, I feel... That said, this is not euphonium or hyouka. It's strange... I'm very interested to see where it goes, but I also feel somewhat uninterested overall. Little disappointed in animation, I'm sure it'll pick up at some point, though.

I don't really get the triangle thing either when it should be obvious that they're just building a harem for sensei.

Like I said it was solid, not spectacular. Compared to what we usually get from other studios, it's definitely good. Even at their average level they can still produce some nice animation and visuals. PA Works is probably saving the big bucks for this show:

And ya I haven't seen Hyouka so I wouldn't know. I can only really compare it to Euphonium at this point.
