Its weird that I'm even watching this since I stalled out on Sound Euphonium. You know how sports anime tend to hugely exaggerate practice regimens and stuff? That was kind of my feeling with that series as well, and since I played trombone competitively for years in school that sort of ridiculous take on those things hit a little too close to home for me, and kept taking me out of the story.

Granted, I'm not sure if I'll stick with this series either though, and its not because the musical stuff bugs me. The mysteries aren't really interesting, and Haruta is a crappy character. Hyouka kind of outshines this by leaps and bounds since the MC in it is incredibly interesting, and the mysteries, while also mundane, are super intense and fun to try to figure out. I mean, come on how the hell is the audience supposed to know the first thing about that horrendous musical note puzzle in ep 1? Or the absurd reasoning with the Rubiks Cube. It isn't fun to just have to wait for that dull "mystery expert for no apparent reason" guy to magically figure these things out without even a remote possibility for any form of audience interaction.

Just now getting around to this one. Only had time for ep. 1 so far.

Episode 3

Now, their sax player joins the band, and it's a Chinese boy who was adopted thanks to the country's one-child policy. While he is the older of the two, he has bad legs, so the parents put him up for adoption so that he could live a better life. That was the message told through that play, and it was pretty nice to see. Maren is lucky to have two sets of parents that love him even if his situation is normally not ideal.

That was a little stretch on the chinese for 2099:
二零九九 - Èr líng jiǔjiǔ - 2099
爱你久久 - Ài nǐ jiǔjiǔ - "We love you eternally"

I was a little cynical at him being abandoned out of love, as you read so many horror stories, but it is anime

This episode felt weird to me like something was missing...like a scene was omitted or not adapted. How did they get Maren’s briefcase? Did they meet up with his parents behind his back and learned his story? Is it a prop or the actual briefcase? I’m probability overthinking things.

Episode 3:

The show took a step back again this week... Actually nodded off in the middle. Disappointed since I liked the last episode.

Let's see... Eyes remain awesome. Chika remains interesting, I suppose, Haruta... continues to try and take the show... and not in a good way, in my opinion. The other characters... they're just "there."

This "mystery" seemed like a stretch...

Hopefully better next week. I want to like this show.

Episode 3: Exit Game

Hmm I don't know. I'm just not really feeling this. I'm still gonna continue to watch it but I just can't seem to enjoy it for what its doing so far. Everything just feels forced.

The case itself was pretty good though. And the last moments for that play was actually heartwarming. Haru is a hack when it comes to these kinds of things.

Probably going to be a new member of the week kind of thing until we get all the members and then focus on the music and bonding aspect that I was hoping for.

Anyways on to the next one.

Have to agree that this series is definitely slowly losing it's touch episode by episode. The first episode was great but I'm really not feeling it now as much as I was at the start. Still far from drop worthy but it's slipped off the "can't wait for next week" plateau.

Yeah I agree, it seems to be progressing way to slowly for a 12 episode anime. I still enjoy it but I feel like it's too focused on the 'mystery' element of the anime and not really musical one which is what I was led to believe it'd focus on.

I do not know if you know this, but HaruChika is actually a mystery novel series. The theme of music is only used as a setting and not the main focus or genre. Gotta love the internet for researching content!

Episode 4

This was a fun episode but I wonder what the point of this episode was for besides finding an apartment for Haruta. I thought it would end with the landlord donating a portion of the money to the music club so they could rent out a place to practice. Oh well.

I like Haruta's sister, Minami. She brought a different vibe to the show without throwing the chemistry of the characters off-balance.

Also for everyone confused about the lack of music, this is a based on a mystery series. It even says as much if you'd look at the plot synopsis. The music is simply a backdrop and common interest for the characters. That's not to say that the music portion isn't important but this isn't another Hibike Euphorium.
