Episode 4: Vernacular Modernism

Better episode this time around. I liked the mystery this time around. But the whole love triangle thing still bugs me. And good lord that was a lot of money. This is what happens when people save little by little.

I know that this is a mystery series but I am not really feeling the mystery aspect it's trying to give off. Most of it is just family problems so far, that have a unique twist to it. Would rather have it focus on music honestly.

But this was one of the more interesting ones that involved architecture and history in a way. Didn't introduce any new characters besides the sister (who is great). Narushima is still best girl.

Anyways nice episode on to the next one.

Episode 4

It all started with Haruta forced out of his apartment complex that's about to be bulldozed and in searching for a new place to live he ends up in an apartment complex where there apparently is some ghost lurking. As it turns out, the place is actually a giant piggy bank and those sounds were 500-yen coins being dropped into the space between the walls, and that key opens up that bank. Amano's uncle sure did like to tease. While this show has been terrible in terms of crafting an overall story, this episode is pretty nice. This show has had its fair shares of highs and lows so far, and this is one of those highs.

Episode 4 was pretty enjoyable for all of the character moments and interaction. It actually reminded me a little of why I enjoyed the first episode as much as I did. I'm just not really getting into the "mystery" aspect of the show though.

Mmm older sister is hot, drives like Aoi from Shirobako. Would love to see them in a race in some future PA Works series lol.

Umm yeah 500 yen coins spill out of a house, that'll take sometime to transport to a bank if they'd even make it there. sheez.

Episode 5

I was able to figure out the answer to this week's mystery pretty early on. Quite heartbreaking. But I don't like how Akari just happened to overhear Haruta and the others talk about it rather than hear it straight from them. It felt cheap and it took away from what could have been a very heartwarming scene between Akari and her grandpa.

Unfortunately it's the least interesting episode so far. But at least Maren had more than one speaking line this time.

Haruchika - Haruta & Chika EP 5 / Elephant's Breath

Akari Goto, a junoir high bass trombonist, comes to the high school in search of Haruta and asks him to help her solve the puzzle of her grandfather's time abroad. Their clues include three paintings and a mysterious color called "Elephant's Breath."

FROM FUNIMATION SHOW PAGE

This just keeps getting better . The mysteres invovle more of a human nature that in thjis case was sad / but touching. Akari is transferring but seeks out Haruta to the Elephant's breath , She resents him for leaving her grandmother alone but the painful truth needs to be told. He is iil and has amensia or not. To make this brief it abot a Kipyking novel about an elephant that was chained and rejected by others . Turns out the grandfather did go to America and at first thought was the riot of the 60's but instead he has PTSD from being drafted into the Vietnam War ans being exposed to Agent Orange whick looks yellow / brown or Dark depending on the mix. Thus his sicknees . He wanted to spare Akari the truth.

Episode 5: Elephant's Breath

So this show has some up and down episodes. This one was definitely, for me, a pretty good one. While everything still remains pretty dry I actually liked this "mystery"

PTSD is a serious thing. I can't imagine how people feel when they are exposed to such stress nor do I want to feel how they feel. The psychological processes are mysterious in their own way.

I like the new girl though. She was pretty cute hitting her grandpa with the pillow. But those times were his moments of bliss I would say. Just the fact that your granddaughter takes the time to see you, even if she despises you.

Looking forward to the next one.

Episode 5

Who knew that a painting tells the story about someone's grandfather being drafted into the Vietnam War? That's what was going on here as Akari's grandfather had been searching for a place to be safe. That was quite a heartbreaking story there, and it's nice to see that through Haruta, Akari and family is at peace again.

Episode 5

This show is losing me fast. Honestly, it's one of my least favorites of the season. Definitely the worst animation and art that's ever come out PA Works first of all, but thats not even the biggest issue here.

It's just, this show can't really juggle all the topics it's dealing with very well. It can't do band club well, can't do drama well, and sure as hell cant do mystery well. These episodic mysteries are just lackluster and uninteresting, it's even worse than Beaitful Bones' mysteries. Over arching mysteries generally are much better, but it doesn't appear this show will do that. It'll just have episodic mysteries that Haru will solve in one episode... Great... Super fun.

Crap. I didn't want to wait for someone else to criticise it before I jumped on board too... Oh well. That's why I should stop procrastinating...

So, I had a lot of things I wanted to say about this anime, but realised that most of them were centered around my mistaken belief that this was a music anime. Looking around for the genre, and not seeing 'music', that rant would have just been stupid. However, even so, even if this is meant to be a mystery anime, with music on the side, rather than the other way around, I feel like even that's done shoddily.

I rarely ever use the terms Mary Sue or Gary Stu, and I wouldn't say Haruta is that much of a Gary Stu, either. But when Haruta solves these mysteries... these very bland mysteries, and comes across as some sort of mystery solving God, I can't help but just wonder why he's essentially OP when it comes to mystery solving. Why the music club setting? Why the premise of collecting members for the brass band? It all just feels very strange, especially having this one boy in the music club solve all these mysteries on the side, when their supposed main goal is to recruit members for the band. I don't understand why this wasn't just a mystery club, where they went around intentionally looking for mysteries to solve, or having people come to them with mysteries.

The mix just feels off, weird, and poorly executed. Take Tantei Team KZ, for example; after their first mystery, they decided to start an investigation team, rather than oh-so-happening to run into mysteries to solve, and it worked well for what it was. Hell, even take Ranpo Kitan. Hate it all you want, but at least it didn't feel like it was taking on too much, and mixing it into some strange concoction that ended up just ruining in. No. It was supposedly awful for other reasons.

I like Chika...

That's about it. That's the most I can really get out of this anime, and that really annoys me. Although, what annoys me the most is that this show went exactly where I was afraid it would go... Nowhere near enough focus on the music, with the mysteries just getting in the way. Although, like I said before, that was my bad for mistakenly thinking of this as a music anime, but can you really blame me, considering? Oh well... There's this other music anime I've been meaning to finish marathoning; maybe I'll just watch it after this, weekly, for my fix of what I was hoping this anime would be.

I mean, it's not awful. It's just not particularly great. But hey, I can watch it for my crazy-eyed girl, Chika.

I think you're wanting something more musical or heavy on the mystery. The mysteries used here in HaruChika are centered around the characters' lives, so this series is basically all about character interactions.

There are other series out there if you want something more focused on music or mystery.

Hey there's no harm in that

So, I had a lot of things I wanted to say about this anime, but realised that most of them were centered around my mistaken belief that this was a music anime. Looking around for the genre, and not seeing 'music', that rant would have just been stupid. However, even so, even if this is meant to be a mystery anime, with music on the side, rather than the other way around, I feel like even that's done shoddily.

Agreed. Coming into this I was expecting more of a music anime with some overarching mystery, I'm sad to see it's gone in the direction that it has gone in.

Haruta is similar to Sakurako from Beautiful Bones, he just always knows the answer. I mean it just takes away the fun to know that Haruta is always going to solve it.

Ya making it a about a mystery club would be alright I guess, but even as a mystery anime it's weak as can be. Luckily we got Erased for some great mystery. I'm not a fan of these softcore mystery shows. Psycho Pass season 1 had some short mysteries, but they were leading up to a big one and also those short arcs were very fun and gave us a better feel of the characters. In this anime I feel like they're trying to do that, but the development feels pretty forced and problems are quickly solved. I just don't like that, and it feels almost pointless to me.

Yes definitely poorly executed. Ranpo Kitan was a peculiar show and definitely had a lot of episodic mysteries, but they were pretty entertaining and the abstractness of the anime made it stand out. The show was weird, but I did enjoy it.

Anyways, I don't think there's any problems with a lighthearted mystery show, but the characters, comedy, and story are just not doing it for me here. I literally don't give a damn for anything that is going on unfortunately.

Still, even then I feel like the character development is really weak and issues are solved within an episode. Even as a SoL anime, I wouldn't say it's sufficient. One of the biggest problems is that it's juggling too many genres/topics at once and it's not really doing well in any of them.
