They are not necessary, especially if the person on the receiving end of the gift is aware you don't have any money. That being said, if they know you have no money, yet you manage to provide them with a thoughtful gift, good for you! Personally, I bought my gf flowers every (I want to say third) week, and on special occasions. But then again, she loves flowers.

Yes, but the important things to remember are that material gifts aren't the only kind (experiences count as well) and the actual value of a gift bears only a limited correlation with its sticker price. Far more critical to good gift giving than enriching a recipient is that you illustrate concern for their specific interests.

For example, if a significant other of mine were to take me to a secluded beach for a quiet evening of swimming and cooking I would be very happy with them. If they gave me a box set of some anime or manga I'd been eagerly awaiting I'd be happy with them, too. If they gave me a very expensive metallic globe I'd be happy they wanted to give me something nice and act appreciatively, but I'd be less enthusiastic than in the former two cases.

Gifts are not necessary, but most people will choose to give nice things to a person they are in a serious relationship with.

Anything could be used as a necessary gift... like how "gifted" I am that is more then enough for you ....
will allways be needed in a place inside your heart -__-

A physical gift is never necessary in a relationship nor should any party expect one. However, giving is absolutely essential to a relationship. Nothing shows affection more than giving of yourself, your time, and your efforts.

I don't feel it's that important, just showing them how you feel is more than enough to make your partner feel special. Gifts are used as an extra way to convey your love to them. It's like showing appreciation for them always being with you and such.

I like giving gifts to the person I'm with. It can be something as complex as a birthday vacation together to something as simple as a home-cooked dinner made up of all of her favorites. Do I expect anything in return? Only a smile on her face. It's more about the appreciation and time-investment in each other than the amount you spend. One of my exes would get happier over a new CD by Coheed and Cambria or Lacuna Coil than roses and candy. It's just a matter of knowing what the person you're dating likes.
