A lot of them ended up fizzling due to a little thing I like to call 'corruption'...

I had a group of people I considered family in my WoW guild back during Wotlk. Unfortunately my real ID had some weird corruption and wiped all my people on there and ended up with a new real ID... damn diablo 3.. so i lost contact with them all -_-

I still do have a friend I met online first, we aren't really close anymore but still friends.

I will usually meet friendly people online and we'll become acquainted with each other but
I don't usually become as close to people I've met online from people I meet in real life.
It's just so much more of a different experience to get to talk to people face to face and be able to hang out. It makes bonds closer.

It's definitely possible. I've been witness to it.
I'm still friends with people I met online in 2004.

I usually pick one or two with every new online game i sink into. But out of the moderate chunk i friends list in game, its a pretty small amount. Usually the ones ya get close enough to to know whats goin on in their life off screen could be called friends in that regard.

With the exception of my best friend (a fellow Bostonian like myself) one of my online friends probably knows/understands me better than any other. Though to be fair she is no longer an online friend since she's local now. So yeah, at one point I did. Then it became like any other irl friendship.

Yes. I just gave my best online friend a huge chunk of my yearly salary as a wedding gift. We trade stuff back and forth, and share alot of secrets. We have seen each other's faces as well, although he is more willing to show himself then I am. (Im incredibly shy)

Yes. I've had friends that i met on line for years. Some from forums, but most of the lasting ones or that have lead to actually meeting in real life are my on line gaming friends. I joined a gaming clan over 10 years ago and have made some great friends.

I've been friends with a guy I met on WoW for around 4 years now - through him I became friends with some of his friends as well.

Also good friends with a lot of the people in my guild on WoW.

I have friends from my school days that I talk and play with pretty much daily online, haven't seen them in about 4 years, so I guess that's an online friendship now as well.

So yeah, I'd say I do.

I think you can make lifelong friends off the internet.

For me, however, I will have to have known them for 2-3 years before I can actually see them as a friend instead of an acquaintance. I have 3 from my days on RuneScape I still talk to and do stuff with.

Side rant. America's notion of friendship is fucked. Every person they talk to is a "friend." Makes me cringe. I think (along with most other places outside the USA I have lived) that you can only really have a few real friends. I think this is where Americas notion of "best friends" comes from. Best friends in the USA = friends for most of the world.
