The November issue of Kadokawa's Newtype magazine is revealing on Saturday that Goro Taniguchi (Planetes, Code Geass, Maria the Virgin Witch) will serve as chief director on a new original television anime titled Active Raid -Kidō Kyōshūshitsu Dai-Hakkei- (Active Raid: Mobile Assault Division, Unit 8). The anime is slated for a January 2016 premiere on Tokyo MX and other channels.

Plot Summary

Set in a part of Tokyo that has descended into a quagmire, the story follows Unit 8 of the 5th Special Public Security Section's 3rd Mobile Assault Division — popularly called "The Eighth" — who don powered armor "Willware" exoskeletons to counter the rise in crime.

Episode 1 thoughts

The action was okay in the second half. Kazari has a tough personality. What a silly ending though LOL

Episode 1

Well, that was a pretty generic start for a mecha and police show. So it begins with a criminal on the loose, and these enforcers are pretty clumsy at their jobs. While they did stop those criminals, it was not after they fooled around and made as scene in front of the public. Not to mention, they wasted their battery power and they almost had their faces seen, which is a big no-no. The action was alright, but there's not much of a story to speak of. Let's see if that is fixed in the next episode or not.

Well that was an entertaining first episode. Clearly aiming for something lighter in mood. At least initially. A bit of foreshadowing of some sinister plot right at the start. But otherwise we were just thrown into the apprehension of some minors in power suits.

The two Police Mech guys are the usual mismatched pair. Not working too well together and always complaining. We got the very ambitious newcomer and an otherwise standard crew of sorts. Nothing that stands out too much atm. But this is just setting things up.

Music was nice too.

So looking forward to more so far.

I'm not entirely sure what I expected from Active Raid, having jumped into the first episode without watching any previews (if there were even any posted) and relying entirely on the brief synopsis. I guess I was expecting something closer to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - where the full implications of this 'Willware' technology is properly explored for better or worse. This anime being a police procedural of sorts the story could've had a much darker tone, not sombre by any means but certainly grittier. Instead what we have here is a show about spray-tan power armour that at times borders closer to a romantic comedy that any crime drama. As it stands I haven't decided if I'll be watching the next episode yet.

Episode 1

That was....interesting.

So, you know how it is; we go the usual start with fighting the bad guy and introductions. Why do I get Zoids and Power Ranger vibes from this show? I don't know, it felt weird like that. Add in a few poses and there you go! Oh, and the GCI and animation looked pretty decent, so nice one!

Looking forward to more.

I’m getting Dekaranger vibes with Takeru reminding me of Ban/Dekared and Sōichirō reminding me of Hoshi/Dekablue.

Interesting was entertaining very light for a police Mecha show maybe that's the theme no deaths? Everyone is very comfortable in there positions and the highest ranking person seems the most out of place. For this show to get legs people will need to change how they operate if this unit is defunked like the higher ups say or it could be political? we will see

I expected Sexy Robocops and I got Sexy Robocops. It was kind of chuckle-funny especially the boss man dropping siq burns like "Oh do you need medical attention for your wounded heart?". The music drove me nuts, though. Too loud and too repetitive. We get it--it's supposed to be lighthearted. Ugh.

Has potential but my expectations aren't that high. Will stick with it for now.

Another show with info dumps ugh, just hope they don't have to go through calling out the progressive phases every time. It did remind me of how bureaucratic the work place can be...
So that set the tone of the show to be light-hearted, with a bit of comedic interactions - was hoping for something more serious.

English interspersed in Kazuri's speech was a little random, though I guess our language has been hip in Japan for a good while.

The race is on to prevent the duo flashing their speedos.

Actually, that was something I found interesting. They have a team that has to grant permission for their next legally defensible cleared level of police action.

Get a feeling it's going to be paced like Rail Wars mixed in with Captain Earth maybe some Heavy Objects with a touch of Plastic Memories if they tie a few episodes together. Just the first episode so might turn on it's head next week to something different but that's what I'm getting out of it from a one off viewing.

Maybe it was just my mood, but this didn't really work out for me.

New girl isn't either likable, funny or interesting. Her character arc seems like it will be to learn how to do things the team's way and lighten up a bit while offering little of value to the team or the viewer.

The team isn't that likable either. There are a few funny interactions, but mostly they feel forgettable.

It does seem like there is some sort of criminal conspiracy going on, but there's not enough about what they were trying to accomplish, or what they are like, for that to be a draw this early on.

Maybe it will improve
