And so it begins. Lots of Sega references seeing that they are the ones that created the game.

Episode 1

It all starts in the real world where PSO2 is a popular online game. Itsuki goes to the appropriately named Seiga Academy and is called in by Izumi, who is student council president who is great at everything. And to his surprise Itsuki is appointed interim VP and is ordered to play PSO2 for a report. Right off the back, he is thrown into the fire with an emergency quest, but he's pretty good for a beginner. Well, I was hoping that it would be a story within the game rather than real world people playing the game. Anyway, I wasn't expecting much from this show, and that's holding true to form at this point. I'll give it another episode at least.

As a fan of Phantasy Star Online since the Dreamcast days I like what I've seen so far. This is outright propaganda designed to encourage more people to play the MMORPG, which is perfectly fine by me. More in-your-face Sega propaganda is just what this world needs!

On a technical level the animation is quite nice. I'm also deeply impressed that they included actually in-game music from Phantasy Star Online 2, which greatly enhances the atmosphere of the anime. It will be interesting to see where this story goes, to see the affect that Phantasy Star Online 2 has on the lives of each character. A good MMORPG has the power to define every aspect of a person's life; this is no less true for Phantasy Star Online with its pedigree of action-oriented gameplay and beautiful art style.

Hmm I feel underwhelmed.

The animation is crap while we get a lot of info dump about the game (which is actually based on the real life version of Phantasy Star Online 2). Yet, nothing seemed interesting so far. The MC is really lame too. Izumi is advertised like the perfect girl for the show but I bet she'll have flaws. I'm curious to know about this character though:

Oh God, they're insulting us.

You'd be surprised how clueless newbie MMORPG players can be at times. An RPG is far more complicated then something like Call of Duty at the best of times, doubly so in a MMO environment where you have thousands of other players wandering around and causing the games environment to constantly change. It this respect it's quite common for people new to the genre to be overwhelmed by all the menus and game-specific terminology. So, I don't think there's anything especially unusual about the protagonist’s behaviour in the first episode; a little embarrassing to watch certainly but far from out of the ordinary.

A slow start to an episode i am not so sure what to say about. We get introduced to the characters and such. Main character seems rather void of much personality. Suppose that is to make him an audience insert. But also makes for a very drab beginning and makes it hard to care about him.

And somehow he becomes vice president of the student council and has to play this game. So we're thrown into it that way. I suppose that is a bit different from them just being sucked into the game. But it certainly also makes this show a bit of an advert. Which can easily cause problems if it gets too bogged down in exposition and the likes.

The Student council president seems to be miss perfect for the time being, sure to have some defects or some such. And also plays as some kind of robot ingame who helps out the MC in the process. Certainly seems a lot more awkward ingame.

Plus we've already got some new character lurking at the edge of things.

So yeah. Not sure what to think about this. I suppose i'll watch a few more episodes.

Episode 1: The RPG That Begins With "Nice To Meet You"

I don't know about this one guys. The opening animation when they are going through the tunnel killing those darkers? bugs what ever, was horrible. Unless it steps up from that it's pretty bad, the animation and in general.

The characters aren't really interesting and everything just felt out of place. Asked to be a Vice President and play an MMORPG? It just felt weird. But this show seems like its taking itself seriously.

It might be GG for this series unless something good happens, I can see a lot of people FF on this show. I'll stick with it to see if they can backdoor my expectations.

Anyways until next week.

We've come a long way since 2000, when the original Phantasy Star Online was released on the Dreamcast; the first MMO for a series with its roots going all the way back to 1987, with the release of Phantasy Star on the 8-bit Sega Master System. As is fitting for an RPG, Phantasy Star Online always had an interesting story, where the game was as much about the story, discovering the truth behind what happened to the world of Ragol when all of its colonists where wiped-out in mysterious explosion, as the interactions between the players themselves in virtual world.

So then, what to make of Phantasy Star Online 2 - the anime? A show about people playing an MMORPG that actually exists in the present day. If nothing else the interactions between the main cast of characters will be key to moving the story forward, watching these people go through character arcs and overcome shared challenged may prove to be the decisive factor as to whether Phantasy Star Online 2 will succeed as an anime.

With that said... there might be something else going on here as well. In perusing different parts of the first episode again there's this one scene where three girls are having a conversation, at the same time as the protagonist is having an internal monologue. What these girls have to say is actually quite interesting, they make reference to recent severe accidents in the area but observe that no one was hurt in the incidents and that no first-responders where present either. This isn't much to go on but all the same I wonder, is this a hint at something more mysterious happening in the anime's universe?

At this point I'm not expecting Dark Falz (a Satan like creature from Phantasy Star) to pop-up in the anime's physical world, outside the game. Still, it could be interesting to see if the story of Phantasy Star Online suddenly takes a turn for the unexpected mid-way through the season

Right from the very beginning when the series was unveiled in preview trailers, I knew this wasn't going to end well.

Sure enough, my fears were right - the show's focus is primarily on the teenagers and their lives, with PSO2 thrown in. This episode featured a whopping six minutes of the protagonist actually playing the game. When he wasn't playing, we're shown probably every single slice-of-life teenage high school anime cliché we've seen various times before.

Izumi is the average, boring protagonist that doesn't play games but is somehow useful. The student council president is a closet nerd that everyone in the school goes crazy over. The student council is uptight and against the protagonist joining them, complete with the glasses wearing member being more uptight than the others. The protagonist's bro is just there with a wacky personality. Perverted adult that gets flustered by a teenage girl.

Yeah, this really isn't how I would have gone about adapting PSO2 into an anime. This is the Sword Art Online approach. A really boring one, at that. Was there really any legitimate reason to not adapt the actual game's story into an anime with new (custom) characters involved with the in-game ones (NPCs)? It's really bad when this is supposed to be an anime about an MMORPG, but it has less focus on that than any other anime that have gone this route. It's especially sad when you consider how .hack//SIGN was originally inspired by Phantasy Star Online, showed off more of the game world and managed to set up the characters without detracting from the main setup, yet PSO2's anime focuses less on the game world and more on the outside world.

This is just the first episode, yeah, but I'm really not looking forward to the rest of this. It's obvious this is just to advertise the game, but it's a really bad attempt. Even the next episode preview for episode 2 shows nothing but the school life.

As for the opening and ending? Meh. Really not feeling them. Especially not the opening after you compare them to openings from the Phantasy Star games, like Universe, Portable 2/Portable 2 infinity and Zero (in Japan, at least).
