The first half felt like Product Placement the Anime. Maybe I'll tune back in at some point if the plot decides to move away from crassly selling a game.

This. Just this. Such a rich environment for an anime, and this is what we get.

You act as though you've never seen an anime intended to sell a product before, as though you have somehow been deceived. In this how Phantasy Star Online 2 was always intended as an anime, tying in closely to the game itself. Speaking of which, it's this same 'crass' product placement which might well the story moving forward in future episodes. You see, this might not be just about people in the physical world playing the game; as so far it looks like this anime will tie directly into Episode 4 of the MMORPG, featuring characters similar to the anime is a post-apocalyptic Earth. This anime could end up being the back story for Episode 4, explaining how that version of Earth was destroyed and how it’s connected to the space fleet seen in the rest of Phantasy Star Online 2

Sorry, where did I say I was deceived? The start feels like a hollow image of what corporate sees their customer base as, thrown in with enough names and images to remind viewers what they need to go buy. Otherwise it's a generic highschool show with a generically powerful student council with a generic lead introduced because plot. No reason to care about a protag-kun worrying over how average he while attracting the attention of the popular girl. No investment in the flashy game graphics.

If it goes beyond that, great. But I find the hook to be boring.

Honestly, your level of concern is making it seem as though Sega has somehow committed a great crime, hoodwinking you into watching an anime designed as product placement. I must say that such a notion hardly seems like a revelation, when Phantasy Star Online 2 has never been promoted as anything but a piece of propaganda. Along the way you'll see plenty of nods to Sega IPs and perhaps even an apocalyptic twist mid-way through the anime, to tie it directly to the game. Nothing untoward, nothing hidden.

I think people who aren't playing the game won't get the hints that this is seemingly a set-up for Episode 4. Judging from reactions from other places, it seems most people who already playing the game aren't noticing the hints as well. One of the hints is that the anime takes place in 2027 while Episode 4 takes place in 2028.

I guess we will see if this is really going to be true or not.

What? I think the show has a poor hook and is boring. How does that come across as some great crime?

Very disappointed in the direction they took with this. Very meh to be honest. Feels like a really long and boring advertisement to buy the game. Why can't they just make a freaking anime set in the PSO universe? I don't really even like mmo anime's. I'm not a fan of SAO and so far this ranks really close with how bad SAO is, it might be even worse. Only time will tell. I'll wait a couple more episodes before deciding but there was just nothing here to excite me. Even the music was meh. Sigh, why not make Pepsi the anime and sell a few soda's why they're at it?

Funny you mention Pepsi the anime. They did a similar concept with soda cans.

I'm simply trying to gauge your reaction, after you've watched the first episode. My point is that you shouldn't be surprised that Phantasy Star Online 2 is a 24-minute exercise in product placement, since that is what the anime has been promoted as since day one.

Yeah, some people don't seem to be noticing the hints that were dropped in the first episode. Maybe if Sega ran an actual trailer for Episode 4 at the end of each episode of the anime then people might start to put the pieces together. With the way things are going so far a lot of casual viewers are going to be caught by surprise if things suddenly hit the fan!

Unfortunately this episode embodies precisely what I've come to expect from the video game industry, especially when it comes to MMOs. Boring, generic, and recycled content littered with rampant self advertising and thinly disguised as entertainment.

Lame, boring, generic... It made me utter the Eight Deadly Words "I don't care what happens to these people", because there was nothing in the show to make me care. Dropped.

As an MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 regularly offers new content to new player. This isn't just small patches I'm talking about either, although the introduction of new items and classes is still the game's bread and butter. Crucially, Phantasy Star Online 2 regularly introduces major content updates called Episodes, where whole new environments and enemies are brought into the game, giving players something new to do in the game instead of always re-treading the same old missions. Funnily enough, if you've been paying attention to the discussion in this thread, you might have noticed the speculation that this anime will directly tie into Episode 4 of the game.

Initial impressions!

How did I feel about it?

Seriously though, there wasn't anything I felt was shockingly bad, but it was just rather boring to me personally. I could see this being an all-right show, but probably not one for me.

You know what would have absolutely made this show for me? Is if when the "veteran robot player" showed up, rather than being the SC prez, it was just a random veteran player who tried to scam or troll him like in a real MMO

Perhaps if I played PSO my opinion would be different, but the show just isn't interesting to me. I still haven't seen the second season of Log Horizon, though. The show did a good job making me want to start watching that at least. lol
