Perhaps if I played PSO my opinion would be different, but the show just isn't interesting to me.

Trust me, as someone who's been into the Phantasy Star series for years, played the original Online game dating back to the Dreamcast and even participated in the beta for PSO2, it still isn't enough.

Everyone's pointing out that this alludes to PSO2 Episode 4, which will be out soon and appears to have Earth as a planet to visit. All this basically means is the anime's going the route of "The game is coming to life!" and is more or less just further advertising for Episode 4. And considering the anime itself is focusing more on original characters, it really adds nothing to current players, especially in regards to the anime characters being so overly cliché and, quite frankly, boring.

No offense but the clues so far suggest that there might be more going on here then you've noticed. It's not simply a case of 'the gaming coming alive'; rather - the anime is the game. The universe of the anime could actually exist within the game of Phantasy Star Online 2, the post-apocalyptic version of Earth seen in Episode 4 may yet prove to be the same Earth seen in the anime. This makes every episode of the anime a direct prequel to Episode 4 in the game, which I think is a quite an interesting approach.

There have been plenty of cross-promotion between anime and games in the past but never something quite like this. By the end of the 12 episodes Phantasy Star Online 2 can offer something worthwhile both to players and the audience of the show. Of course, there is going to be considerable overlap between these two groups, furthering the anime's undisguised purpose of generating more interest in the game. Which is fine by me, I look forward to seeing Sega further secure Phantasy Star Online 2's place in popular culture as one of the best MMORPGs ever made.

Unfortunately this episode embodies precisely what I've come to expect from the video game industry, especially when it comes to MMOs. Boring, generic, and recycled content littered with rampant self advertising and thinly disguised as entertainment.

As an MMORPG Phantasy Star Online 2 regularly offers new content to new player. This isn't just small patches I'm talking about either, although the introduction of new items and classes is still the game's bread and butter. Crucially, Phantasy Star Online 2 regularly introduces major content updates called Episodes, where whole new environments and enemies are brought into the game, giving players something new to do in the game instead of always re-treading the same old missions. Funnily enough, if you've been paying attention to the discussion in this thread, you might have noticed the speculation that this anime will directly tie into Episode 4 of the game.

I'd have to take your word for it since they don't actually release any content to anyone outside Japan.

Well, that was remarkably bland.

Is this suppose to make me want to play PSO?

Watching someone literally play PSO for 20 minutes would have been more exciting and interesting.

I don't know why you're trying to excuse this anime. Yes its pretty much advertising but that doesn't excuse how boring it was. Look at the Gundam Build Fighters series. They're also advertising series but the difference is that they're actually interesting and have characters that you care about. This episode was boring drivel and is likely to make people not want to play the actual game.

I agree. Actually I would say it was surprisingly almost excitedly bland. No battles, no ecchi, no conflict, no nothing really. Which leaves one wondering what will follow.

As a long-time fan of Phantasy Star Online since the Dreamcast days I think that there is a lot to like about this anime. In terms of production values there is a lot of attention to detail, both music and sound effects are lifted straight from the game, which is always great to hear. It’s little things like the electronic hum of a telepipe and seeing all those virtual characters hanging around in a ship lobby that really add an air of authenticity to the whole production. I'm honestly excited to see where this anime will go in the future, the hints at a much darker plot that have been mentioned so far could make Phantasy Star Online 2 one of the most unique anime of this season.

Being accurate to the game doesn't mean much with no decent story or characters. You're just making a show about people playing an MMO and nothing else. An MMO you could be playing instead of watching the show at that. -.-

Make no mistake, this anime is made with those already play Phantasy Star Online 2 in mind. This is why it's great to hear so much music and sound effects from the game; it really expresses a keen sense of detail on the part of those who create the anime, enriching the show as a whole. Granted, anyone watching this show could be playing the game itself right now and that is a good thing indeed; it's Sega's intention to encourage anyone sitting on the fence to jump-in and start playing Phantasy Star Online 2 for real. Of course, the fact remains that people can't play a MMORPG 24-hours a day (not yet anyway...), necessities of biology will always intervene; this makes the anime always a great watch for anyone having something to eat in-between marathon gaming sessions. So, whether you're already playing the game or not this anime has you covered.

Great commercial, still watching it though. As a former player of the actual game I'm curious to see how they are going to go about it because as far as I'm concerned PSO2 doesn't have a school setting

Episode 1

Man, you guys leave PSO2 alone. It's fine! Well in all honesty, the first half...or 3/4th, seemed like it was trying to be the blandest, most average show ever. The show is clearly just trying to show off the game it's based on. Either way, it had fun moments at times so it's whatever. The part i really liked was when he first got into the game and his interaction with Soro. Hilarious.

The ED is amazing. Soro has got moves. Heck, i was dancing with it.

If you're talking about the ending music, it's from the game festival last summer, I miss it.

I was talking about the dancing but i think the song is awesome too! That game festival for PSO2 looks so fun.
