When is censorship a good thing?
Posted 1/7/16 , edited 1/7/16
It depends on what it is you're calling into question and who you're asking, if you ask me. I'm ambivalent on the subject. I like being able to speak freely on matters without fear of reprisal , however I do think we forget and take it too far in our zeal sometimes, and consider moderation, for example, most see the moderators as doing an important service by keeping the forums clean and friendly for all ages and backgrounds. Its a difficult subject matter, so I bring it to you! What do you think? Please respect others for their opinions please but feel free to voice your disapproval for their posts.

I'll say, I think free speech is important, but not without boundaries.

I don't think censorship is ever allowed. Just because you don't agree with someone's opinion doesn't give you the right to deny them their right to speak.

Alot goes unnoticed mein friend. You just don't know how subtle ppl influence oach other over time on the subconsious. Its sociology 101, social control. Its real, even if you don't know it.

You pretty much sum up what I think.

Free speech is fine, but with limits. I mean, I could say something absurdly stupid that I feel should get me arrested. I could type it here, but the mods would hit me with the banhammer which I would deserve.

An example I love and agree with is the ban on the Nazi flag and salute in Germany. The Nazi party (not the soldiers, they listened to orders, people love getting that mixed up) were very twisted in many regards. I believe that banning the modern use of such hateful and spiteful imagery is proper. The flag and salute stand for racism, hatred and what not. Something like the Confederate flag...

Let the SHIT STORM commence.

Censorship is a good thing when the public doesn't need to/can't handle some things uncovered.

Yep. In terms of information when safety is concerned or integrity of law investigations. Also liable and advertised misinformation. It ends about there though. Information almost always has a choice of seeing or not.

Irresponsible speech that can directly harm others.

Sometimes censorship can correct a problem that would be indirectly caused by the lack of it. Public nudity for example. If it were normal, it wouldn't be clean as a whole.

Pretty much this.

Only other example that can be argued to be legitimate is, yes, when somebody "thinks of the children."

I can't really disagree with someone who calls the confederate flag a racist flag. Whether or not they choose to ignore its actual place as a battleflag that stood out from the union flag.

And to PV, I'm not really going to argue about it. If he had replied about the flag, I was actually going to ignore it. Still will; this comment is the only elaboration I'm going to give to the subject.

Only when it becomes annoying. Everyone deserves to be heard. Just don't be that guy on the corner preaching about Jesus Monday to Sunday, telling people they're going to hell

Well, the flag was of a rebellion started over slavery, people, especially blacks living in the south, felt it shouldn't represent the south anymore. Getting into arguments that something doesn't literally equal a meaning doesn't mean that it doesn't have other negative connotations, like homophobia doesn't encapsulate just fear as its used today.
