I don't get why PV's thread was closed. but I think it's cuz he didn't censor his words.

kinda a borderline closing tbh. I woulda left it open cuz no one was actually insulting others. They were just discussing curse words.

I think f*gg** is actually a pretty bad thing to call someone. It's referring to a stereotypical personality that homosexual men are thought to display, and so when someone is acting silly or goofy, you're just making fun of that person PLUS all homosexual men. It's like a dirty AoE bomb tbh.

I don't understand racism though. It keeps evolving. Ther's this trend on LoL now where they say "he's from Africa" or if you're afk, "yeah he's in Africa" or something like that. Idk how racism is just getting worse.

I hate people that curse for every other word because then it loses all meaning. You can't tell how they mean it because they use it to describe EVERYTHING. While we are on-topic I feel this is a good time to use this

I think the use of faggot can be exceptionally fair in terms of calling someone contemptuous or undesirable. Though as I said earlier, you should be ready to explain yourself. And as PJ said:

Words lose their meaning the more they are used. For instance the word 'gay' and 'retarded'. Often young generations don't feel too bothered by such words because most have a vague understanding that people 'do not mean it'.

Whether people(probably kids) acknowledge it or not, this word is particularly appropriate as it's broad spectrum use has actually started using its older meaning.

No. I think no matter how broad spectrum the word "gay" has become, it's still going to be offensive, since people still use it positively when coming out or identifying their sexual orientation. If you always call yourself "gay" because you're homosexual, and then someone down the street says, "that's gay." (stupid) then you'd be offended no matter how many times they do that.

But for the word retarded, I think its broad-spectrum usage is okay. Simply because if someone is truly retarded, they probably won't be offended because they couldn't understand. And the people close to retarded people won't be offended and would let it slide because they've heard it used so often as meaning "stupid" that they just let it slide. No one uses "retarded" anymore anyway to refer to retardation. They just call their children/loved ones "special" and schools do it. So retarded's positive usage is waning, and only its negative usage is still inplace. So the negative meaning takes primary and permanent standing -- unlike the word "gay" where its positive usage is still widely used.

I think at least on the web and to anyone who has been to a modern high school in the last ten or so years, everyone pretty much knows that a lot of imageboard users, teenage COD players, teenage guys irl use shit like "faggot", "gay", and "retarded" as placeholders for what generally would be "stupid", and so on. It's no new thing. And as long it's not actively being used against a mentally disabled or LGBTQ person I personally don't see what they're doing so wrong, they are, in an essence, just being stupid, and what could be claimed as "overly offensive", for the sake of outrageousness. But at long as it's not actively harming anyone, what's wrong with it?

You kind of have to learn to ignore what other people say that has nothing whatsoever to do with you, regardless of how crass a display you find it to be, and accept that you can't change the way those people talk. It's not that hard.

And if someone does insult you directly with a word you find offensive, don't overblow it too much… if anything, overdramatizing will only entice the person teasing you to call you the same thing- again, and again, and again? What can I say? I'm not going to fib. People are becoming conditioned to hypersensitivity standards on the web, without realizing how poorly such "standards" transfer to real life- and those people need to grow thicker skins, stop acting like they are made of fragile glass. You're old enough to be a teenager, let alone, an adult- left unsupervised on the web, you should be mature enough to at least deal with these things. Web aggressions are not the end of the world, even if they may seem drastically real to you when you denounce your reality in favor of the web. Simmer down. Simmer dooooown. It's gonna be okay.

I mean, I don't like having to censor myself or coddle and reinforce people who are living in a fantasy or delusion, is that so wrong? I used to be like them, and live in my confined bubble- but that wounded me so much mentally that I almost thought at one time I could never recover. I'm not going to entertain these oversensitivities now when I know they're actually harmful. I also spent years being the recipient of the worst sorts of secondary school bullying, and believe me, if there's one thing I know, it's that my naivety and refusal to accept their vulgarity or ignorance towards it that eventually caused my bullying to become one of the most brutal things I'd experienced- and I've also been subject to abuse that still hurts me… I mean… I'm sorry. I cannot empathize with someone being offended over a singular usage of the word "bitch". I can't. I was forced to deal with torment everyday at more than a few points in my life. I'm done with the hypersensitivity. I'm fucking done with it. After being verbally and physically assaulted for what was ongoing years, in highly brutalized ways, I am not putting up with it. Take your hypersensitivity and shove it up your crock. I have no words left for you.

No, this is just you drawing the line somwhere else.. somewhere far far away from where most people draw it..

And a lot of gay people are cool with the word. I had a bi friend who'd said he prefered guys that said he doesn't mind the word. He USES the word all the time. It's the white knights that lose hp over the matter.

I know more people who take offense at the words like retard or autistic than I do gay..

Either way its still retarded (herp derp) that people take such offense to stupid things like this anyway.

If gay was only seen as offensive, then I don't believe homosexuals would refer to themselves as such. I was specifically talking about the word faggot. I don't know of any homosexuals that would seriously refer to themselves as faggots. I feel my suggest definition is still acceptable as these two words, while sometimes used in the same manner, are still quite different. And much like the word "gay", context is the most important thing to separate these definitions as "gay" never used to have homosexual connotations.

In terms of the use of retarded, one could still argue it's offensive as physical retardation applies even if it's more or less being replaced by words like cripple. Also for those mentally challenged, abusing the word can lead to degrading people's feelings toward them. Much like your issues with the word "gay". I'd also like to say those at least with mild mental retardation still deserve to be treated as human citizens. Still the word retarded has its use in normal descriptive terms to refer to such conditions and as long as it is used as such it shouldn't be held offensive.

Idk. In college whenever I said "that's gay" I offended a homosexual guy. They were really touchy feely about it. Sky Williams is too, and has verbalized his disagreement with that kind of usage of the word.

Ya know the Japanese don't really have curse words. They have insulting words and insulting words with a lot of emotion in them but even their kids say the same insults that adults do.

For some reason, I censor certain swear-words when I post on CR. I don't know why. It just seems like some strange quirk of mine. I see many others use such words in their posts, yet I censor mine. I guess one reason was because I was trying to be conscious about the rules of the forums....and maybe I should maintain my practice, because I hear about threads being locked and accounts being nuked, and I don't want to get in trouble.

Well, anyway, I do believe there is a time and place for swear-words, but sometimes the usage of certain swear-words, such as the eff-word, can be an effectual means of expressing honesty. Supposedly it's even a sign of greater intelligence, but that was just something I got from IFLS's (I F*cking Love Science) Facebook page, a source that I recently began to feel mixed about because it's possible that they could be another bunch of biased sensationalists or something.

There will always be a stigma associated with words like "f*ck", "sh!t", "piss", "damn", "Hell", "bitch", and most especially "c**t". I believe it's wrong to use such words around children, and children shouldn't use those words when they're so young, but at the same time they learn them when they grow older, further justifying the fact that "everybody curses". It's just one of those facts of life.
