French police shot dead a suspected suicide bomber Thursday as he attacked a police station in Paris, a year to the day since jihadist gunmen killed 12 people at Charlie Hebdo newspaper.

The man reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest) and was carrying a knife and possibly wearing what appeared to be an explosives vest, the interior ministry said.

News of the attack came just after President Francois Hollande concluded a sombre speech at police headquarters to mark the anniversary of the killings at Charlie Hebdo's offices on January 7, 2015.

"On Thursday morning, a man attempted to attack a policeman at the reception of the police station before being hit by shots from the police," said interior ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet.

Explosives experts were deployed to the scene in the multi-ethnic Goutte d'Or district, close to the Gare du Nord international station, the source added.

With France also still grieving from the massacre of 130 people by jihadists in Paris in November, Hollande used his speech to call for greater cooperation between the security services.

"Faced with these adversaries, it is essential that every service -- police, gendarmerie, intelligence, military -- work in perfect harmony, with the greatest transparency, and that they share all the information at their disposal," the president said.

Many of the attackers in both January's rampage and the attacks in November were known to French security services, having either travelled abroad to fight with extremists or been prevented from doing so.

Hollande said that since the attack on Charlie Hebdo, nearly 200 people in France had been placed under travel restrictions to prevent them joining up with IS in Syria or Iraq.

- 'Died so we could live' -

The president said the three police officers killed in January's attacks "died so that we could live in freedom".

A police bodyguard tasked with guarding the newspaper's editor, Charb, was killed alongside him by brothers Cherif and Said Kouachi and in scenes caught on film the brothers shot dead another policeman, Ahmed Merabet, as he sprawled on the pavement near Charlie Hebdo's offices.

The next day, a policewoman was shot dead by jihadist Amedy Coulibaly in the southern suburb of Montrouge, apparently as he was heading to attack a Jewish school.

Among changes set to be introduced in the wake of the November attacks are new guidelines allowing police to keep their weapons even when off-duty.

The president reiterated his pledge to boost the number of police and armed gendarmes by 5,000.

The speech will be followed by a concert on Sunday to mark the one million people who poured on to the streets of Paris on January 11, 2015, in an outpouring of support for freedom of expression in the wake of the deaths of Charlie Hebdo's best-known cartoonists.

The newspaper had been in the jihadists' sights since it first published cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2006.

The widow of Franck Brinsolaro, the bodyguard who was killed in the attack, said this week she has filed a lawsuit claiming that he was left vulnerable because the security around the newspaper had been reduced before the shootings.

Charlie Hebdo has continued to raise ire, rejecting self-censorship in the wake of the attacks and working from ultra-secure offices in a top-secret location.

On Wednesday it published a typically provocative special edition featuring a gun-toting God, sparking protests from the Vatican.

The cover of the anniversary edition features a bloodstained, bearded God figure in sandals with a Kalashnikov rifle slung over his shoulder under the headline: "One year on: the killer is still at large."

Yawn....... sounds like the world to me. The human brain is an idiotic thing. For soo much potential we would instead believe in a false idol. When will people get it already, there is no God, there is no devil, no heaven or hell. Just what we have in front of us.

-_- I don't understand this world sometimes. I would gladly stand in a open field and curse gods name 1000 times just to prove a point. When will people realize that God is nothing more than money. God is everyone's excuse, do you know how degrading that is? To subject your life to begging on your knees for forgiveness. I can't help but feel sorry for them, even the terrorist at times, imagine if they were raised with values, to actually value life. They would gladly run with a bomb strapped to them and run into a crowd of people with God's will in their mind. What the fuck has this world become?

Sometimes I can't even waste my breath for things like this. If there was no God, we would live independently, instead of using the excuse. Mankind will always find an excuse, instead of owing up to their mistakes they hide behind god like cowardly dogs! This world can't be saved... the only thing we can do is find happiness in every moment, forgive the person and punish the action. If we can't forgive we will always hate, if we hate we will always suffer, if we suffer we will slowly Kill ourselves. Why do people want to live their life like that? Why are people so useless!

I will never understand humans...... sigh.. it's too late for us unfortunately. Just live your life the best you can, ignore the world around you and create your own paradise.

Yah, and that is your opinion dude. I could curse god with you 1000 times but what would that exactly prove?

All I can say is, just let that be you. You have nothing to gain by trying to prove to someone that has a majorly accepted belief that they are wrong. No reason to force your opinion on others. My immediate family believes that I am a Christian. And if that lets them live through life feeling 'prepared' and they die happier when that time comes, then that's better than me forcing my own view upon them.

Look, I understand that other people use god as a means of dealing with the passing of others by letting them into heaven so we have a place to pray for them when they're gone, again those people are weak, but I was like that to when I was a kid. I went to church, I prayed for my loved ones, but as I grew older I saw the reality of things, I knew god wasn't answering my prayers, I knew nobody was listening. So I respected when others prayed for their loved ones, I respected that people want someone to look over their shoulder and keep the departed in memory and soul.

I'm not as cold hearted as you think. I'm not completely oblivious to what God stands for, I'm just trying to say that others do not see it that way, and more so than not people today in our world are still using god as their weapon of truth to slay the unworthy and evil that they see.

You say let that be you? So I am just to stand by in silence as others enforce their religion onto me? And respecting their choice? This is exactly why religion is tearing this world apart. So the fact that we must allow people with religion to be right and have their say, I can't say that religion is Worthless to someone who is religious because that is offending their belief, it's not their belief to begin with, if they saw what religion really is they wouldn't be so understanding, they wouldn't be so righteous.

By right i am Christian, I have been baptised, walked a pilgrimage, all those useless things, but at the end of the day. I don't live like a Christian, I don't pray, I don't spread the word of God, I don't repent for my sins. I live my life like a human being.
