I went to Japan for the first time last year and while I had a good time it was a little awkward wondering around by myself. I've been thinking about going back again this year but I'll probably be flying solo again. I was wondering if there were any websites or travel agencies that specialize in anime or video game tours/meetups in Japan? I know you can hire tour guides but I was thinking something more along the lines of actual fans traveling together or meeting up with local people to hang out. Just wondering if something like that exists.

Thanks for the link. Not quite what I'm looking for but it's an option to consider.

I'm going with a buddy or maybe two in April, we plan on being there for 10 days. Not sure when you're going. We're gonna stay in Tokyo mainly and try to get to Hiroshima if we manage to save enough $$$ by then for a Japan Rail Pass each. Not gonna lie though besides some sight seeing we're mostly going to get fucked up and t̶r̶y̶ ̶t̶o̶ getting laid no matter the co$t. Any cool places you recommend we stop by while in Tokyo? I know for sure that we'll be drinking and then trying to sober up in a maid type cafe if we can stumble upon one. I also know I'll be visiting that 1/1 Gundam no matter what.

I don't know when I'm going but it'll probably be in the summer. I'm want to climb Mt. Fuji and it doesn't open for climbing until July. As far as places to suggest I don't really have any. I spent most of my time in Tokyo walking back and forth through Akihabara checking out the stores and arcades (failed to find Super Potato). If you visit the Gundam statue be aware there isn't much else to do in Odaibo (where it's located). It's just a touristy hotspot so unless you plan on doing some shopping you shouldn't spend too much time there. I think the Gundam museum is located up some steps next to it the Gundam. I couldn't find it when I was there but it didn't dawn on me until after I left to check up there. Don't be a dummy like me and make sure you look up the location before you head out.

The only thing is to make sure you get portable wi-fi (I'm assuming you have a smartphone). Getting around when you have gps and can pull up train routes on the fly will make your life really easy. If you book your "hotel" through airbnb a lot of the apartments will supply you with pocket wi-fi for no extra charge. Otherwise I think you need to order it before you fly to Japan.

Yeah we're looking into getting a month of a roaming on one of our cell phones or just renting a Sim card before we get there so its waiting for us at the airport/hotel.. We managed to find some cheap flights/hotel combos for some nights and the rest were gonna just stay at hostels. Budget trip lol but this will be the only time I'll be able to travel for at least two years so I'm jumping on it. We also want to avoid the heat and that's why we're going in April at the latest as summer is too hot and winter is too expensive. Honestly besides wanting to check out akihabara were just gonna go in different directions every other day in Tokyo. We might just scrap the trip to Hiroshima as all we really wanted to check out was the war museum. How long did you go for last time and what was your budget if you don't mind my asking?

I stayed for a week. Flight was 1,240 (I live in the midwest so flying out is more expensive). I rented a room for $400 with pocket wi-fi included for the week. I spent one night in a capsule hotel in Osaka for $14. I purchased a JR Pass for $227. I think that was pretty much it for what I spent money on before going, so less the $2000 US. I still had to buy train passes when I got there for the different lines (JR only covers a few) but you can buy day passes for $5-$10 dollars.

Food is pretty cheap. Honestly I ate at the conveinance stores almost exclusively. I'd grab some onigiri and some soda for like $2.50 at a 100 Yen Lawsons or a cup of noodles and that would hold me over for hours. I bought a lot of snacks and soda out of vending machines while I was over there. The ramen shops where you can order with a vending machine are around $5.00. So, you can eat really cheap if you want too.

I went with $1,000 to spend but I probably could have gotten by just fine on less then $300. I made some videos a few months ago, they are poorly put together but I wanted to record something before I forgot too many details. Part 1 is the prep for the trip, Part 2 is Akihabara. Third vid is crap that I bought.
