Synopsis

When a certain man is released from prison, he knows exactly where he's heading first. After falling in love with a traditional comic storyteller's rendition of the story called "Shinigami," he is determined to become his apprentice. The performer, Yakumo, has never taken an apprentice before, but to everyone's surprise, he accepts the eager ex-prisoner, nicknaming him "Yotaro."

As Yotaro happily begins his new life, he meets others in Yakumo's life, including Yakumo's ward Konatsu. Konatsu was the daughter of a famous storyteller, and Yakumo took her in after her father's tragic death. Konatsu loved her father's storytelling, and would love to become a performer in her own right--but that path is not available for women.

Awesome! WTG CR!

Edit: I watched it. It's pretty good. Ironically, the only parts in the show where I started losing interest were the actual rakugo segments. We basically heard most of Dekigokoro.

Wow, I'm not really sure what I expected but it certainly wasn't entire sections of rakugo within the storyline itself and for that to work so well. I got completely caught up in those, especially the thief story. Yakumo seems to run pretty hot and cold, especially in regards to anything about his now deceased rival. It'll be interesting to see how that plays out in future episodes. Also rather amusing is that there was barely any protest to the Yotaro (fool) nickname, even using that as his performance name.

Yes, but it kept me more interested than most of the regular length premieres this season.

Initial impressions!

Wow. I had no idea what this was about going in (in fact, i had to look up what "Rakugo" was when I realized it'd be a big part of the episode). That being said, I really enjoyed this show. I just love the odd kind of "old-timey" setting they have. I also love all of the characters so far. The Master is just so cool! I'm with Yotaro on that one!

There's a lot of dialogue in this though. I feel like it's a show i'll never be able to fully appreciate without speaking Japanese. It kind of stinks because I want to look at their facial expressions, but I have to read the subtitles, and I end up torn between the two missing little bits of both. I do love the character voices they do when giving performances though. Interesting stuff - this Rakugo.

Anyway, this was the first show of the season to blow me away. Interesting concept, great characters, and awesome setting. Probably my new favorite of Winter (so far, at least).

Episode 1

Well, this show just isn't for me. At least I now know what rakugo is all about, but there were parts of this episode that had me snoozing, which is exactly what Yotaro does that gets him expelled by his first master. He just doesn't like anything not in Sukeroku's style, so he goes over to learn under him, and he accepts pretty easily seeing that the alternative is to freeze to death. The whole rakugo stuff is pretty interesting, and certainly it's something I would like to learn more about, but the storytelling aspect just didn't resonate with me. I'll give it another episode at the very least.

I found the first 18ish minutes a slog to watch through but once it gets to the actual performing it becomes compelling it's completely different from most anime I've seen in that it treats you like you are in the audience watching an animated storyteller. The show goes into great detail animating their motions as they tell the story and it swept me away. It helps that this is something I've never seen before since I live on the prairies in Canada and the protagonist who feels annoying in those first 18 odd minutes has an infectious positivity that grew on me.I'm definitely invested we seem to be getting lots of shows that are surprising me this season (well, mostly this and Haruchika).

I actually found this one interesting until it become abit much

Well I havent been in a real rakugo show but NHK did featured it once and I was curious enough how this anime will play out.
But this episode could easily ended at 30:17 but they extended it and It got a bit too much , was this an OVA?

becuase after 30:17 ... I went ,....

its winter already and they are playing in a big stage ...when did that happened did i miss something

I love the character desgin and animation.
The Rakugo part was pretty silly but interesting

I watched it again in full but it's pretty much what I had expected already. Rakugo is a form of entertainment that I think will get more attention as this show airs. Not only that, the comedy and character chemistry was a nice insight for the show. Not much else to say for now since I don't have much knowledge about the context. However, I think Yotaro's chemistry with the audience is quite entertaining despite being a rookie.

I enjoyed this from start to finish. Despite being 40+ minutes I thought it was quickly paced. They never really beat around the bush, always getting to the crux of the matter. All the dialogue was the straight and to the point. I like how never really shied away from talking about the dead guy even considering one of the character relation to him. I like that we got to see the main character try the thing the anime is about and see his entire routine.

And speaking of the routine, I thought that was definitely the most interesting part of the episode. Sure not every joke hit me but there were more than a few times where I did laugh along with the anime audience. I can appreciate that old timey Vaudeville humor. But more importantly just listening to the story was entertaining in and of itself. Before this I didn't know Rakugo was a thing but this not only managed to inform me of its existence but also demonstrate why people would be interested in this type of entertainment. There's a lady in the episode who says something about closing your eyes so you could imagine what they were talking about and while I didn't actually close my eyes, I was definitely imagining the entire sequences while they told their stories.

I don't think the Stories they tell necessarily need to be all that funny or engaging, I just think they need to paint a clear picture of what they are talking about and also, more so in Yotaro's case, show how the characters progress in their craft. But of course being funny and entertaining would be a nice plus and for the most part I thought they were and will be. I really hope they do have many episodes where they dedicate a good portion to the characters doing a full routine.

I can definitely see why some people aren't going to be in to this. I'm worried that this is going to be one of those anime that the fans say "well you just don't get it" but as a fan I think this is just something that resonates with me and certain people and others it's bound to fall flat for understandable reasons.

I agree that the 45 minute run time may seem scary at first but once you start watching you get lost in the story and characters. It's a very quick feeling 45 minutes. Great show so far and major kudos to CR for picking this one up. I can maybe see this one attracting a very small audience but I can already tell those who like it will be very appreciative.

Oh, and that ED song is excellent.
