Wonderful episode as always. I don't really like shows or movies telling backstory that end with a tragedy, but the story of this show is very interesting and it's painful to wait for another week to find out what happen next.

My only knowledge about rakugo before getting into this show is from Joshiraku.

Yeah, I had heard of rakugo before this show but had only read brief descriptions of it. Now, after seeing this, I'm really tempted to seek it out in person. I'm not sure if that was an intention of those who created the show or not but I doubt I'm the only one who feels this way.

Ep 4

The rakugo, as usual, was really well done. Sukeroku's different voices and the way he emotes absolutely sells his performances.

Miyokichi is an interesting character so far. I'm curious to see if she helps Kikuhiko to become less of a "tightwad". Every week I am amazed at how good this show is and can't wait to see how things develop.

I love this series. It has an interesting story, it's entertaining but quite, not as hectic as the average anime.
If they can keep the quality I'm pretty sure this will be become one of my favorite animes.

Episode 5

Sukeroku is living it up, while Kiku is pretty nervous. But while Sukeroku has a bunch of girls, none of them are of the quality that Kiku has in Miyokichi. She gives him her full support. Then it's onto the festival where Kiku becomes a trap Geisha, and it's hard to believe that a guy is wearing that costume. Akira Ishida puts on a great performance here with that feminine-ish voice. This show just continues to be great.

Episode 5

Look at our man, Kiku!

Seeing Kiku in that costume and acting out his role was just fantastic! I believe he found a clue to a style of Rakugo that fits him best. I'm also glad to see how the episode keys in on how Kiku is struggling with Rakugo, while Sukeroku is having an easier time at it.

Talent can get you a longways with the arts.

Lol Kiku dressed as a woman although I have to admit, he is quite the looker. Good rakugo performance this episode. It was quite entertaining and I feel like Miyokichi brings the best out of Kiku.

A turning point of sorts for Kikuhiko - he's gaining more confidence and is starting to open up to Miyoki more.
Again, Kiku focuses on quality rakugo ("You're never around decent women, so you sound stupid"), while Sukeroku focuses on liveliness; neither is wrong.

I don't know how they did it, but I was also waiting for the reveal to the audience even though they & I clearly knowing she's a guy.
Feminine looking guys are very popular in asia - some even look better than girls!

There's a sad kind of irony here, I feel. Kiku was raised in a Yoshiwara brothel wasn't he? The reason he was apprenticed was because he couldn't find a profession in Yoshiwara especially with a bum leg and yet as an adult he is dating a geisha and makes his play debut dressed as one.

This episode was another excellent one with the stage portion being really enjoyable. Not to mention that we finally get to see Kiku finding a place for himself.

This series seems really underrated to me. More people should be watching it!

This show continues to impress me. The characters are fascinating and the story telling is superb. This is definitely the surprise of the season for me. I had no idea what this was about but it is one of my favorites.

What a wonderful episode. I really love the friendship between Yakumo and Sukeroku. I'm starting to also adore Miyokichi. She looked like such a different person without the geisha make up.

Really glad that Yakumo finally had such a moment. This will give him confidence for the future. I felt a little bit of panic, like Yakumo, prior to the start of the performance and wished that the play does not go awry. Thankfully, the play was splendid! After this success, those guys will hopefully get more theater opportunities.

The more I watch, the more this show just seems to be from some other place in time. It feels like a show that could have been made 20 years ago or maybe 20 years from now. There's just such a timeless quality to it that I find myself often overlooking it when I'm pondering the best shows of the season because it just doesn't feel like it even belongs in the same category. It's not even that it's necessarily better or worse than this season's other front runners.. it just feels like it's from some time and some place that's completely unique.

I must admit, I was really kinda frustrated after last weeks episode. Kiku just kept getting pulled around by other people and his own rakugo wasn't improving. But this week made up for it. He finally went off a bit on Sukeroku for fooling around all the time and then he managed to not just hold his own but actually shine in the play with Sukeroku. That shows that the talent has been there all along, he just wasn't able to find the best way to bring it out.

Episode 6

So Kiku was originally a dancer before injuring his leg. Kiku keeps on questioning himself wondering who he is doing his rakugo for. Poor Kiku is just lost in thought and while Sukeroku is making it big, he sees it as discouragement. It is during his performance that he realizes that his rakugo had been only for himself this whole time given the different reaction he is getting from the audience, but still he goes to let everybody know that he has great talent. That episode did a nice job bringing Kiku into focus, and he sure was a changed man after a performance like that.
