**********

Here's our exclusive interview with Suzuki Nakaba that we did for our last art contest!

Q1) You are both a story writer and an illustrator, how do you manage to combine these two types of work?

A: I don't consider the illustrations and the story separate. I don't write down the story in words, I envision the characters in my head, and think about what they could do that would make an interesting story. So the story and the images are made at the same time.
I enjoy the style of making both the illustrations and story myself.

Q2) Where did you find your inspiration to create the series The Seven Deadly Sins?

A: I've always enjoyed movies like Hissatsu Shigotonin (The Ultimate Assassin) and Terminator 2, where a person you thought was bad turns out to be good, and I wanted to write something like that myself. I think that's where the idea for the characters to be “sinners” came from. In the sense that they're not perfectly good people, I've also been inspired by dark hero and antihero works. The movies of Jean Gabin, the movie The Professional and the historical figure Cesare Borgia could be inspirations as well.
The idea behind The Seven Deadly Sins was to create my own take on the legend of King Arthur. Ever since I found a book about King Arthur when I was in the 7th grade when I was looking for foreign fantasy stories in the library, I've loved him. King Arthur's story isn't told as a single tale, it's a combination of many stories written by many people. It's the same idea with the Cthulu Mythos. I'd always wanted to be one of the people who wrote stories about King Arthur, and that's partially what drove me to write The Seven Deadly Sins. There are some characters in Arthur's legends who appear only as names, and who don't appear in any stories. I'd like to draw characters like that someday.

Q3) Could you introduce the hero of The Seven Deadly Sins, Meliodas? What are his powers? How did you come up with this character?

The thing with Meliodas is that no one has any idea what he's thinking; not his allies, not his enemies, and not the readers. But he's a guy you can trust. I think that's what makes him attractive. He's also a bit of a pervert. But there's a secret to his power hidden in the fact that he's a pervert. Heheh. His strength and his perversion actually both get their power from the same place. Look forward to the day when this mystery is revealed in the manga!

Netflix has licensed the series, which is why it didn't get a simulcast back when it first premiered. It won't be streaming anywhere else (at least in North America and possibly other English-speaking territories).

However, they did partner with Sentai to do a home video release of Knights of Sidonia, so it likely will get a DVD/BD release at some point.

King Arthur and Cthulu mentioned in the same paragraph. I knew I liked this author. XD

Think my drawing skills are a bit rusty for the competition. But I'll look forward to seeing the winner in volume 20.

I've been trying to get back into drawing regularly, so I think I'll give this a shot. Not sure if my skills are good enough to stand a chance at winning, but I'll aim to have fun doing it at least. I might be a bit rusty. I'll give it a shot though!

Good luck to everyone who enters! I look forward to seeing all the entries! 8D
