Why do people romanticize mentally ill/homocidal characters?

Some people like to think that if ever they come across someone similar to the character, they would become that person's "special one" (only one being smiled at, treated nicely, etc). Since the character has problems with their attitude or something, getting affection like that is a 100% more meaningful if you compare it to others with "normal" attitudes.
Then again this is MY OPINION only

Probably because Japan has a god awful grasp on how mental illness works and weeaboos love dark and edgy characters. Duh.

Because most people have morbidly inconsistent worldviews that lack any logical moral foundation or outworking whatsoever.

I have always wondered what is with the fascination with women falling for hitmen, vampires or otherwise homicidal men...

Because they're more fun than the sane characters. Would you rather watch Death Note starring Light Yagami? or Death Note starring his boring, normal father?

His normal boring father in complete honesty. A series about an adult who works in law enforcement that is given the power to capture criminals who escape the reach of the law is a lot cooler sounding then watching a series about a spoiled brat get pissy when his plans don't work out.

Characters who know how to kill and survive fights might be appealing to someone who desires a partner that could protect them from harm.

It's also possible to be drawn to the character's personality. Sociopaths may have strong charisma and be good at manipulating people, and sometimes you just respect the way they're ten steps ahead of everybody and can drop snide comments. Like Izaya Orihara, for example.

Tsubaki Kasugano kissed Yukki right in front of Yuno, then wondered why her Death Flag was set .......

Cause it's what humans do when nobody is looking. It's this rush that we get from it..... Or its just the simple fact of making the character very appealing to look at even when they're covered in blood.

We're all masochistic whether you want to believe it or not. It all depends on what type of pleasure we are looking for.

In Yuno's case: when she's not flipping out she's intelligent, funny, a good cook, and possessed of an absolute loyalty to her love.

Even at her worst, the right words from Yukki were enough to calm her down.
