Good evening, Ran 76.

I have often heard such statistics. It's alright if I smoke, because I'm more likely to drown in a tub than die from a shark attack. As to your false analogy, cars come with seat belts, airbags and insurance. I operate a car at my own risk. A terrorist can strike at any time, whether or not I've signed on the dotted line. I would prefer my death to be the result of old age or else my own folly, thank you.

As to your claim about Islamic terror, specifically; if you widen your definition of "terrorist" to include "common thug," your 90% estimation may hold water. However when terrorists strike, they may be decried by the majority of Muslims (here in the U.S.) as practitioners of a false faith, but the terrorists claim to be Muslim themselves. I hear very little of terrorists who are NOT Muslim, these days. I don't deny their existence, but I also don't deny that the majority of today's terror is coming from the Muslim world.

I'm not of the belief set that because one thing (a car) is more interacted with than another (an Islamic extremist) that I should completely and equally accept both things without consideration to the question of origin and motive in their actions. I have gotten into my car almost every day for the past three years and it hasn't yet blown up, slit my throat, raped me or, as you have suggested, run me over. No other cars have done any of those things to me, either, in spite of my being surrounded by them on a daily basis. I doubt my fortune would be so great if I were in the company of the same number of Islamic extremists/terrorists for a day.

No one should take comfort in the lie that terrorism is "rare," or that "It's not likely to happen to me." We do a disservice to both ourselves and the moderate Muslim majority when we don't check it at our gates.
