Do Most People Who Watch Anime Even Read Manga?
Posted 1/9/16
What the title says. I've been on MAL and notice a sore lack of ratings in the hundreds for most manga series. Does this mean most people don't read?

I tried to get into Manga but it never took for me, was never into reading comics/books when I was younger so I guess it's just followed on from that. Wish I was sometimes..

exactly what I was going to say.I wish I enjoyed manga, but don't. I like reading books although I haven't read One in a long time. Also the visual novels I'm not even sure I would be into even though a lot of good animes are based off of them and there is many routes and stuff. One day I should give one a try.

I read manga....but I have to carefully choose which series I want to follow. I also read light novel translations.

But then again I collected comics for years before the company I followed the tittles of went wonky and I lost most of my interest.

I read manga. I tend to leave it for months at a time, though, and then launch myself into it with frenzied enthusiasm for a week or two, then repeat. I find it's easier to lose track of time reading manga: the pacing is entirely your own to set, which is the biggest advantage I think the comic medium has over prose or video.

I'm still mostly an anime-watcher, but yeah, I really enjoy manga too.

I also don't follow manga at all.
Don't care really, it's not like reading manga is a required bucket list item for being a fan or otaku.
I tend to prefer webcomics that are manga-style but written by English speakers.
Like Two-Kinds and Misfile.

I read manga more than I watch anime, actually. It's easier, because I can read at my own pace.

Started reading manga a little while ago and I have to say, its much harder to rate/judge a manga just going by picture panels. Sure, there's art and storyline to go by, but that's about it in a manga. In that sense I can only come up with a 'good' or 'bad' rating for manga series, critiquing would be highly objective. I would personally avoid it even though I enjoy reviewing stuff.

I read far more manga than I watch anime.

Very little of what I read or watch gets recorded on MAL. I've got over 50 titles on my current follow list.

love reading manga as much as I love watching anime. It was so great in high school having headphones in and reading, made the day go by so fast.

I have also wondered this same thing as well. I honestly imagine that there are more people who just watch anime than there are that read manga and watch anime. I prefer manga for the pacing as well but also I feel like manga ironically does a better job at conveying emotions and the seriousness/severity of a scene better than an anime does. It gives you time to appreciate the art where as anime just takes you along for the ride. Also if your an average anime watcher like me and don't understand Japanese sometimes you feel your eyes are being diverted from seeing the most important parts by while reading subtitles.

But i can understand why some don't want to get into the other side of the medium. Sometimes reading manga can be a chore, especially if its a already well established, long running manga. It requires more active participation. As lazy as this sounds, you have to click/flip to the next page as opposed to sitting there and watching it happen. You have to read more dialogue than you will ever read having watched its anime counter part AND you have to do it from right to left following a sometime convoluted panel flow AND sometimes panels are situated in such a way that doesn't always make it obvious where to read next so you have to try not to spoil your self on future lines. The pictures are black and white; now personally I actually prefer the simplicity that is the black and white manga aesthetic but I can understand why some people would prefer color. Some times it can be difficult to understand whats happening in a scene when you don't have certain color ques.

I think they both have their pros and cons in comparison to each other but I prefer manga because anime often tends to skip what I consider to be very crucial character building scenes. It typically things that have no bearing on the over all story but can help to give the audience a better sense of who the character is and why we should care. I understand the do it for the sake of time but I can never shake the feeling while watching manga adapted anime that I'm missing out on something.

I'm one of those people who don't read the manga

I prefer to watch the final form, which is the anime.
