Plot Summary

The story follows the East German Army's 666th TSF Squadron in its battles and political conflicts during the BETA's westward push in 1983.

The East German Army 666th TSF Squadron "Schwarzesmarken" (Black Marks) are a special-forces unit tasked with assaulting BETA forces through unconventional tactics; specifically, they target Lux and Magnus Lux to deny the BETA the advantage of ranged firepower. Their orders are given the topmost priority, such that it is common practice for the 666th to ignore allied distress calls that will result in deviation from their original mission, even if only for a short moment.

Anime project for MuvLuv Alternative Schwarzesmarken announced. It is part of the Muv Luv franchise and the light novel is written by Hiroki Uchida and illustrated by CARNELIAN.

And now it begins. Before the Betas invaded Alaska, they were in Germany.

Episode 1

Right off the bat, there's battle and one of the pilots bites the dust. Inghild didn't last long, and Iris put her out of her misery. Then Katia goes down but she was saved by Theo, who is being awfully cold to her. She reminds Theo of Lise, who is his sister, but they were separated by the Stasi. They are from different sides, and Katia admires the Eastern side, but she doesn't realize how twisted the East. But it turns out Katia is looking for somebody.

That was a solid start to this show, and certainly it works better than the way Total Eclipse started by introducing everybody rather than just one character. There's a lot that's going to be revealed going forward, and so far it's interesting seeing that Germany is divided, but defeating the Betas requires them to be united. That epilogue leads me to believe that ominous things are coming. Talk about brutal.

Definitely not afraid to go a little dark, which is what the subject matter requires. Pretty good stuff so far. Another strong showing for Sundays in Winter 2016

Whoa...

That was intense. The plot felt fast but we'll probably find out a lot more about the story and characters soon. There's some political conflict and stuff going on behind the scenes so it should be interesting to explore those. Action was nice and the violence was pretty evident. Thank goodness this wasn't censored.

Not bad, definitely has potential. Was that the OP song btw? Hmm, they should put more effort into that unless it's the ED. Artwork seems nice.

Well. To Eastern Germany we go. Where the Beta are attacking. Men are dying at the front and behind it. We've got the 666th Squadron who takes out the Laser class baddies without fail and without consideration for anything else.

Mission goes alright for the most part except one breaks down and gets another killed. The guy meant to keep an eye on them did not. So he gets pushed into the next mission behind enemy lines to rescue some UN team. Which turns out to be a single pilot.

Said pilot reminds our friend Theodor of his little sister who was lost while trying to cross the border into west Germany. The new girl seems to be awfully innocent and naive for a veteran. But that quickly turns out to be a ruse (unsurprising) as her actual mission is to look for a General Alfred Strachwitz. A decendent of the Strachwitz of WW2 perhaps ?

And we get a scene of the Stasi clearly up to no good. And perhaps hinting at Theodor's Imouto being alive ?

Having been keeping up with the LN's and VN's, she's been through some shit.

While some stuff was shortened and edited a bit for the sake of being turned into a Anime. It is staying true to both the LN's and the VN. So far. Looking forward to next week!

Also was glad to see the after credits scene.

Episode 1:

Yes this was just as I expected it to be. Was just judging this off the PVs and it's close to what I'd expect it to be. I enjoyed this first episode.

The darkness and intensity of it was great. The action is pretty legit so far even if the monsters are CG. It works. Man CG is really trying to make a breakthrough isn't it?

I love the character designs. All of them are unique in their own way and no one looks similar to the other. Kind of sad that they had to off one of the better designs. Why couldn't she have been more plain

Definitely looking forward to the next one. The music is great so far too

This strikes me as a rather odd setting for an anime; 1983 East Germany isn't exactly ancient history, but it also isn't so recent that everyone watching will have the context for it. Of course, I also grew up in a hotbed of eastern European immigrants, so I suppose I probably heard more accounts of life in East Germany in the 1980's than most people anyway. Certainly more than your average Japanese person.

To those that are younger than me out there: is this something that they cover in schools now? Just curious.

All that being said, I thought it was pretty decent. I liked the action, though I'm less certain about the intrigue. Then again, the intrigue part didn't really come into play until the very end. I think I'll keep with it for a couple episodes and see where it goes.

Stupid unnecessary 'shocking' 1st episode death was stupid but that's Muv Luv so I will look past it.

I am old enough to remember the cold war and east and west Germany but the cold war vibe is still kind of strange as settings go. You're being eaten alive by aliens and all you can think of is reporting your neighbors? Weird stuff but there must be some WWII/coldwar buffs who are very excited about this. Me, I'm looking forward to the love polygon/harem and BETA mecha action and will be checking my brain at the door weekly as that's what I need to do to watch this show. It's fun, I really shouldn't be trying to analyze it.

ep 1

Better than I expected, but the pacing. Let's just hope that that doesn't turn out to be an issue.

The OST sounds pretty neat though, and I'm happy with everything so far.

So, you want to apply for asylum? Better get in line then. We'll get back to you on that in about eight months or so.

Alright start, I suppose. I was certainly expecting worse even though the title admittedly still bugs me. It didn't blow me out of the water in any way and it went a bit too far in trying to establish itself as a "dark" show, looking a bit stupid as a result, but I can see this being interesting in the future. Will probably keep unless the gibberish gets too strong.

I literally questioned why on earth Katia would defect from West Germany to East Germany. You ditched a better living condition, trust in your friends, family, neighbours and comrades, etc. (How can you fight if you can't trust your comrades will defend your back?) for this.

Out of curiosity, how did you feel about the German being spoken in the episode?

The wild loli makes me nervous about the route the series is going to take despite the very dark start. Wild lolis can be dangerous and unpredictable creatures. Depending on their moods they can drive a series to new heights or tear it down. One should always be cautious when a wild loli appears.
