I probably listened to some of his songs on the radio when I was younger, but didn't really know who he was until I watched Labyrinth in college, at my friend's request since I had never seen the movie before. We never got to finish it either, and it wasn't until years later that I was finally able to, when I was in my mid-20's. It's still one of my favorite movies and movie soundtracks to this day. Also, didn't realize that he had done so many songs that I already know.

Truly a sad day for the music world and everyone who loved his music and acting. I know that I will miss him. R.I.P. the Goblin King A.K.A. David Bowie.

May every copy of the "Dancing in the Street" video be destroyed to preserve his legacy.

Damn, all the legend are dying off lately. This keeps up and only lousy boy bands will be left.

RIP David Bowie... a great artist who taught people that it's totally okay to be unique. Too bad most people of the 21st century have forgotten that lesson.

Bowie was one of the world's most innovative musicians and one of the greatest singers for half a century.

He constantly changed the sort of music he created, worked with many different and talented musicians over the years. Bowie's work was always something new and different; also surprisingly good as opposed to simply being different for the sake of being different. It was unique. (On that note, if you listen to some Bowie and don't like it, there might be other Bowie that you do, his music changed a *lot* over the years).

Bowie was an influence for many musicians across many genres. His music evolved right up until his death... literally.

He was also a capable actor, played in movies and on stages, performed in musicals. He did painting as well, he was just all around an impressive artist.

He had his own internet service going in the 90s as well (bowie.net?), so I'd say he was surprisingly up on tech for an old musician, too! Perhaps not too surprisingly, actually; he was the sort that always had an eye to the future.

Honestly, to cover everything about him would take a looooong time, because he did interesting stuff for 50 years. Wikipedia can do a much better job:

Ugh. He was so fabulously handsome up until the end. Has anyone seen his most recent music videos? Talk about social commentary.

Is it weird I don't know him?

I keep thinking of the Bowie knife and that has nothing to do with him.

don't really care too much about this. I grew up thinking you had to like him. the only thing I do like about him is his musical presence in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou

I heard the news too and it's too bad David had liver cancer, which is just random, since no one knows the exact cause of this disease. Wiki says hepatitus, drug abuse (from conventional drugs), diabetes, obesity, iron overload or Wilson's disease are the causes.
