I know this is a vague question, but I would like to some mystery anime, new or not, recommendations. I recently finished The Perfect Insider, which I liked quite a bit. I also like Detective Conan a lot. I tried getting into Kindaichi Returns, but I couldn't get into it.

Suggestions?

I would recommend "Beautiful Bones" (A corpse is buried under Sakurako's feet, is the real title... I believe... but it's beautiful bones on here)

It's very good. It'll probably surprise you, one of the best anime of last year. It's the type whose coherent plot develops and you don't really even see it coming until the end. It's very well done, and it's beautiful to boot. The characters are all keepers and it really gets you thinking. I loved the crap out of it.

Some others:

Hyouka: Group of friends solve mysteries around their school. The solutions are clever, even if the "crimes" themselves are fairly mundane.

Gosick: Starts a Goth-loli version of Sherlock and Watson, but gets pretty dark towards the end.

Persona 4 The Animation: Group of friends try to solve a series of murders around town that take on an increasingly supernatural flair.

Dusk Maiden of Amnesia: The newly-formed paranormal club solves a series of supernatural incidents at their school, while investigating the truth behind the death of their ghost-president.

Here are a bunch that at least have mystery as an element. A pretty mixed bag of old and new, dark, serious, comedic and WTF. A couple of these have mixed reviews, but I enjoyed them all.

How could I have forgotten Bakemonogatari??? I'm so dumb. Damnit. It's nearly schizophrenic, but you'll get it after just a little bit. All of the monogatari series are worth watching, pretty crazy stuff.

Also, you should definitely watch "Baccano!" From the makers of Durarara, it's not exactly a detective / mystery type, but it kind of is. Information brokers, the supernatural, et cetera. It's extremely good. Takes place in the 1940's if I'm not mistaken. It's just a different kind of mystery, definitely one you won't see coming. So good...

And for some ridiculous but funny "loli dykes" ... I mean detectives (no, this is a direct quote from the show) there is "Tantei Opera Milky Holmes". A bunch of loli detectives, pretty much retarded - and everyone hates them. It's really funny, it's almost about them not solving mysteries... usually. Not the best out there but I can't say I didn't enjoy it.

But Baccano! is probably going to be the best thing you ever watch, in your life. It is it's own definition.

I don't think you can judge whether or not a show is a good mystery when the mystery hasn't been anything close to revealed.
