we all know theres too many out there so could they be better? I feel like I haven't seen real life depicted in shows like that. kids like to get high, drunk, have sex, skip school. are the Japanese too naive?

A. Most kids do not do that in the US.

B. Most People Hate The Jerry Springer Show.

C. Japan has a far more homogeneous culture than we do, bereft of the diversity of the US.

D. Drugs laws in Japan are very severe.

Why would I give up an idealized romance for trashy teenage melodrama not unlike School Days where the characters actually do have sex? Why would most people give a damn whether or not Sekai is pregnant? She's trash, Kotonoha is trash, Makoto is trash, everyone is trash!

Not to say that this genre doesn't have merits, it just isn't my cup of tea.

I would prefer the middle ground, where we have some real development in relationships. Shows that run two or more seasons only to end with the OTP holding hands or kissing for the first time are pushing the idealism just a little to far.

By middle ground, I mean anime like Chivalry of a Failed Knight or the manga Actually, I Am.

In both, the OTP have long since confessed to each other, begun dating, and had their first kiss.
It's not the end of the story, just a milestone on a long-term relationship.

I ask, why would they produce something like this? Why would they need to, in your words, grow a pair? I mean, sure, I guess School Days was pretty successful in terms of the Visual Novel, which has 4 Visual novels in total. I never liked School Days except for its sex scenes

Some of what is thought of as "real life" are in fact things that are common in some countries but not japan.

Different countries and different cultures, different laws, access to certain substances Can make school life different in other countries. Not to mention very rigid and structured home life.

Solution: Do what Golden Time did and make a show about university life instead.

Never seen it, but if it is anything like the MTV show Skins I'll be less than impressed. So much angsty melodrama about teenage relationships, my god. Not that Japan doesn't do it too, but they're more tasteful about it. Feelings are fine, but once it descends into pregnancies and petty vengeance I am gone. Most young people couldn't tell a healthy relationship from their ass.

P.S. I'm not entirely interested in self destructive life styles, although I may have liked Requiem for a Dream.

I am not American....so could only guess. But for American kids to like the "crappy shows" it could be that the shows are made for people their age in japan and that there are things they find in common being in the age range of the target audience.
That kids are enjoying what for the most part in "School slice of life" a positive fun show.

There's not really much that can be done to make them "better". All you have to do is pretty much create some charismatic characters, put them in some comedic situations and that will suffice for a school-life anime. I don't think it needs to get better. If it doesn't appeal to you, that's it.

A school-life anime that depicts sex and drugs could be interesting due to the dearth of anime that depict such things, but that doesn't necessarily make it better. The characters have to be interesting for the drama that comes with these activities to be significant.

PV brought up a good example in School Days. School Days isn't really a conventional harem series and it's pretty dramatic. The problem is that all of the characters are bad and uninteresting. So the drama surrounding them is paltry.

There are two shows that were remade for American audiences that originated from the UK. Those being Skins and Shameless.. After watching both versions of both shows, I can safely say that the US versions are quite 'safe' compared to their original UK counterparts. Being from the UK myself, I would have to say some of our youth must be among the worst of the developed world.

It's not a side of youth I'd particularly want to see in anime as it grew tiring in my own life.

to be honest all I'm asking for is for a group of friends to sit around and smoke pot. talk about whatever and go on with their daily lives. it doesn't have to be like the movie Kids but enough of the guy that cant control his boner and spits blood out his nose

Never did any of that in school. They already did make a school life show that was as realistic as it gets for me - it was called Watamote.

Anyway, how to improve school life shows? In my opinion, they should actually focus on the schooling. On trying to pay attention in class. On the challenges of studying. On the anxiety around tests. Maybe have certain characters mesh will with certain teachers and not so well with others. Show the real drama that is trying to do well in school. Japan could do this far better what with their focus on cram schools and cultural expectations for success.

But that's just my opinion
