The new Kizumonogatari movie is coming to theaters in the US, but I haven't seen any of the monogatari series. I read that Kizu is only the third novel (coming after Bakemonogatari parts 1 and 2) and that it's a prequel to Bake. So does that mean I can watch and enjoy this movie if I had only seen Bakemonogatari? Or should I watch more of the series?

Prequels are usually, if not always, made with the understanding that you've already been exposed to the series. That's why it's not really a good idea to watch Fate Zero before Stay Night, or the Star Wars prequels before the original trilogy. You should definitely watch at least Bakemonogatari before seeing the movie, it would probably help to watch more of the series before watching the movie though.

Here's an example/analogy, and you don't even have to be a fan of this series of movies to see the point.

If you had watched Star Wars in chronological order, the reveal of Luke's parental origin, might still have been important to him, but the audience would have already known what was up, and the movie wouldn't have had such a cultural impact.

I suppose if someone is young enough, that would have already been common knowledge going in, so watching Star Wars 30 years on never will be able to create the same feeling as when it was released in theaters.

You currently do have the opportunity to get the original feeling for the Bake series that will be lost to future generations due to spoilers. Don't ruin it for yourself just in case it's great...

Kizumonogatari is split into three movies, only one of which has released.

You might as well enjoy the entire series while waiting, it will be a while before all three movies are available.

Although Kizu is the first in chronological order, I would highly recommend start watching Bakemonogatari, follow the broadcast order, and read the light novel for Kizumonogatari. The movie is split into three different parts, and you probably won't see it all until 2017 maybe?

Having seen Bakemonogatari and the following shows, and being in possession of the recent light novel release of Kizumonogatari, I'd say you could watch Kizu before seeing Bake, and they would still be enjoyable as individual works. I don't think there are really any big plot continuity issues / spoiled reveals from watching in either order.

My recommendation would still be to watch Bakemonogatari first if possible, followed by reading/watching Kizumonagatari (which is following the story according to the publication order of the original JP novels). I'd say Bakemonogatari is better designed to introduce and get you interested in the characters than Kizumonagatari is. Kizu is better once you're already invested in the characters from Bakemonogatari.

I will note that I strongly recommend reading/watching Kizumonagatari before you watch the various sequel TV series after Bakemonogatari (the first one of those is Nisemonogatari). Kizumonogatari provides a lot of context for understanding the relationship and interactions between Shinobu and Araragi, as well as a couple of other characters to a lesser extent, which become very relevant in some of those sequels. It's a shame Kizumonogatari hasn't had an official release before now.

I wish it were coming to a closer theater to me than Seattle. I just don't know if I can justify driving two hours for an hour long anime movie...

As far as your question is concerned, I say it doesn't matter however you choose to watch it. You might want to see Bakemonogatari first just to get accustomed to the series style though. If you aren't used to the Shaft style it can be kind of jarring on just a visual level, but beyond that the series is also incredibly dialogue heavy so that would take some getting used to as well.

Ok, thanks a lot everyone!

I'll definitely watch at least Bakemonogatari.

That's also a good point that movies won't be done for a while. So maybe I'll pass on seeing this first one right away, and try to catch part 2 on it's release.
