To Our Valued Crunchyroll Viewers,

Over the past 5 years, we have been dedicated to making Crunchyroll the best place for anime fans in Canada to enjoy Japanese anime, simulcasting 50 shows every season and adding many library titles. We’ve also expanded the free streaming service across mobile and living room devices, including Apple TV, PlayStation and Xbox consoles. In order to continue building the best collection of anime alongside the increasing cost of content, we’re making some changes to the free Crunchyroll experience.

As of February 1, 2016, catalog titles will be available exclusively to Premium subscribers. As a free user, you will still have access to all currently airing titles, so you’ll have plenty of time to stay up to date on the newest anime. Each new episode of a currently airing title will be available for a 13-week period, after which it will be available to Premium subscribers only.

As we strive to continue improving our Premium service on a global level, there are many factors that must be considered on a region by region basis. For the past 5 years, despite fluctuation in the Canadian exchange rates and the rising cost of licensing and streaming anime, the price of Crunchyroll Premium has remained the same. Our goal is to continually improve our Premium user experience and deliver the highest quantity and quality of anime and manga titles to all subscribers, including the latest premieres straight from Japan, without raising the price of our Premium service.

If you have any questions regarding the change, please see our knowledge base article click here.

If you'd like to sign up for a 14-day free trial of Premium to get unlimited access to all our shows ad-free, please click here.

-------------------------------

I'm guessing because of the plunging dollar? I don't see this ending well I'll be honest.

I definitely appreciate Crunchyroll keeping the cost the same, as I don't expect the Canadian dollar to get any better in the foreseeable future..

Well I guess I basically have to find a new site to watch anime on...

But I'll come back one day with premium.

Wow....I have no words for that one.

"Well with the dollar we're not getting enough cash out of Canada....so we're going to make more people pay to watch stuff here. You other countries, don't worry about it. You're currency is good enough that we don't have to take extra money from you."

I thought initially this was a global thing. Now that they had enough people invested in the site it was time to lock it up for premium only, but this is actually worse. Targeting people in another country based on currency.

Oh well, businesses gotta do what they gotta do. Though the same goes for the consumer, will make their own choices based on situation and business practices.

That's hilarious. Specifically picking out Canada.
Once my first paid sub's up, I won't be picking another one because things like this make me absolutely sick.

This is a really lousy situation for us in Canada, but I imagine that if you let your whole company take a loss it will impact everyone around the world who uses Crunchyroll.

Well, that sounds a bit rubbish. And, with Canada usually being seen as "almost get treated as well as the US" compared to the rest of us that makes me worried that other regions will follow suit before too long. Or that it'll go worldwide and, trust me, that'll hurt you long-term.

I think it's a mistake though. Maybe having a smaller "Free Library" than subscribers get, but restricting anything non-current? That'll bite you in the hindquarters.

Look, I know there are Business Realities that companies have to deal with. I really hope that you actually have people thinking how these come over to a customer's perspective, though. As you kinda need to keep them around for income.

Remember, it's not just the simulcasts that hook people in and get them wanting to watch loads of stuff. It's the back catalogue, too. And if people can't access any of it without paying, how do they know if it's worth it to even bother?
Today's free viewer may become tomorrow's paying subscriber. But if they have to go elsewhere for catalogue stuff, they may not come back at all.

As someone not in Canada, this still worries me to be honest.

For one, the rest of the world often feels like it takes second place to US+Canada. If even Canada now takes second place, how long until they pull this crap elsewhere? Or they saddle the US subscribers, too.
I'm not convinced I can trust CR if they start down this slope.

It makes me concerned that the whole "flavour" of Crunchyroll is starting to change, and not for the better. I might be in the "lucky" group this time around but how long will that last?

I'm currently living off of guest passes, and that'll be ending soon due to the limit. This is going to really suck for a lot of non-premium Canadians, seriously. (Live in Ontario)

Just hope to maybe get a job in the summer and get premium, until then I'll use a different site.

Definitely mad respect for keeping the price the same with the Canadian dollar though.

Yeah, that blows. Can't really say I'll have much reason to use CR anymore since I can't afford a subscription and I don't watch many airing shows. The catalog was all I really came here for, especially since CR is one of the few anime-streaming services available in Canada. I hope this changes in the future, but considering our dollar right now...it's not looking good.
