If there is a thread like this, then you know what to do.

So, a while back I made a thread for "Women & Anime" and in it were some questionable requirements. Well, this is what this thread is about.

If it were YOU, what would be YOUR requirements to be able to consider if someone were into Anime or not?

I'll keep it simple. Here is mine:

They have to at least be keeping up with new Anime that airs every season. (Winter, Spring, etc.)

GO!

Edit: I just realized that this thread should probably be in the Anime section, but i'll leave it up to the mods for where to leave it.

I personally think that requirement in the OP is bollocks. So someone could regularly watch anime and have seen well over 100 different seasons, but because they haven't seen the latest stuff they're not into anime? What complete rubbish.

I guess some people forget that anime takes years to be properly released to certain countries

Someone who doesn't just watch anime when they feel like it, and can accept that their favorite shonen is not the greatest anime ever created. Mine is.

Watch anime, that's it. This whole "true anime fan" debate is complete horseshit in my opinion. The only purpose it serves is for one kind of anime fan to talk down to another anime fan. Get along, for fucks sake!

I've moved it there.

(Sometimes stuff like this does get left in GD, either because we don't notice it or because we figure "lifestyle" related discussion probably fits GD as well as Anime, but I think having a little variety in the Anime forum with threads that aren't specific-show based is good.)

My requirement would be that they finish at least one episode or movie of anime within a given year.

I do try to keep it fair, but if someone tells me they are into Anime, but only watches Naruto or one series, then I call them out on it. Lying is something I won't tolerate, especially when it comes to my hobby.

I know a lot of obscure anime noone now ever talks about, but I know enough of that to fill an encyclopedia, but now.. meh. I never cared for other people's standards when it comes to being qualified in my mind to be an anime fan, nor do I care to apply to meet others' standards.

1. What if they prefer marathoning?
2. Mainstream anime is still anime.

My "requirements" would simply be if they like anime, and they've watched a lot of it, then they're into anime.

This is just how I see it.

To me, a person is "into" anime if they actively seek out anime because it is anime. In other words, they have an idea of what anime is, and they look for anime which they enjoy. Maybe it's one show a year, maybe it's 20 shows every season. Maybe it's new shows. Maybe it's old shows. Doesn't really matter as long as they're intentionally seeking it out.

I do make a distinction though. For example, I occasionally listen to the Beatles, but I don't consider myself into rock. Why? Because I only listen to the Beatles and I don't go out of my way to listen to rock music. I'm not "into" rock as much as i'm just "into" the Beatles, if that makes any sense.

But yea, that's just how I look at it.
