they're into anime if they like anime shows
they're not into anime if they're not into anime shows

to be more specific (all of the below are into anime)

they're new to anime if they watched less than 50 anime series
they're a "casual" fan if they watched less than 300 anime series
they're an "invested" fan if they watched less than 1000 series
they're an "otaku" if they watched at least 2000 series

i'm a casual. :p

I would count 200+ being invested. Remember, that is a lot of shows and time as well. 500+ would be Otaku.

not really... getting to 200 is not that difficult (some would even argue that it's easy)

Not if they are watching shows that save multiple seasons and if they are a full-time college student.

What elitist bullcrap. A person is still a person. Shared hobbies are fine, but stop trying to shove square pegs in round holes. How we are different is the fun and important thing. If you think you are Otaku that doesn't make you superior or inferior. You are you and I am me. I know there is anime I don't like, but I don't dislike those who like them. I don't dislike those who dislike anime as long as they aren't vociferous about it. IDIC people; IDIC!

Less than 25000 episodes watched means your a casual in my books.

I do episodes because Dragon Ball is 153 episodes and shouldn't be weighted the same as a 12 episode series.

Edit: I do think this is a bit of a joke due to this being relative to others, as well as your group of friends. For instance if you have seen 5000+ episode this may seem like a lot to some groups, but to others such as mine this would seem extremely casual as they all have seen 10k-20k episodes each.

They're an anime fan if they like anime. In what way are any of us qualified to rank and define someone as an anime fan or not based on their devotion to the medium?

So you consider yourself a casual?

(I note your anime stats at MAL show only 5,128 episodes completed).

Even AnimeKami doesn't make the cut:

While there is something to be said for episode counts (i.e., completing all of Dragon Ball certainly be given more weight than completing a short form 12 episode anime), variety also needs to be considered. After all, someone that has only watched Naruto from the beginning through the present may have a lot of episodes under their belt, but they are going to have a much narrow view than someone that had viewed the same number of episodes compromised of 10-26 episode series.

Watch anime, that's it. This whole "true anime fan" debate is complete horseshit in my opinion. The only purpose it serves is for one kind of anime fan to talk down to another anime fan. Get along, for fucks sake!

I agree! If someone only likes mainstream anime then they still LIKE ANIME FOR FUCKS SAKE. If someone is a casual then they are still an ANIME. I can tell you I don't watch as much anime as I used to back when I was younger but that's because the kind of anime I like is harder to find since the older I get the more mature anime is what I want to watch.

If someone likes anime then they are a fan. Not a hardcore fan but just a fan. The only time someone is not an anime fan is if they don't watch anime. It's as simple as that.

^This. Especially if you're older than 20, you'd think we'd be past this. Why people cling to the OP's mindset I'll never understand.

The point was no-one was supposed to make the cut.

EDIT: I actually do consider myself a causal as most of my friends have 10-20k episodes watched.

I feel like this is directed towards me, so i'll respond.

I am not, by any means, an elitist for Anime/Manga. I respect if someone has watched only a few Anime and do not berate them for it. My intention is only that of mere curiosity. If someone has only watched under 50, 20, or whatever number of Anime, then it doesn't matter. It is like you said, you are you and I am myself. Nothing more or less. Just wanted to make that clear.

Just to be clear, this is not my mindset. I am just curious. However many Anime someone has watched doesn't matter; I just wanted peoples' input on the matter. Nothing more or less.

Excuse my assumption, I was rather hasty. It's such a trivial aspect that literally causes nothing but turbulence. I dislike such things by nature.

I understand since I have seen it myself. I think I am more curious on if someone keeps up with seasonal Anime like I do or has seen the same amount. I think things like this are why lists were made.
