Excuse my assumption, I was rather hasty. It's such a trivial aspect that literally causes nothing but turbulence. I dislike such things by nature.

I understand since I have seen it myself. I think I am more curious on if someone keeps up with seasonal Anime like I do or has seen the same amount. I think things like this are why lists were made.

I would add as well as for reference too. Obviously the more anime you see, the harder it'll be to remember them all, haha. I do understand what you are saying though and agree.

I feel like this is directed towards me, so i'll respond.

I am not, by any means, an elitist for Anime/Manga. I respect if someone has watched only a few Anime and do not berate them for it. My intention is only that of mere curiosity. If someone has only watched under 50, 20, or whatever number of Anime, then it doesn't matter. It is like you said, you are you and I am myself. Nothing more or less. Just wanted to make that clear.

I'm sorry, but it was NOT directed at you. I did not direct it at any person, but the general ideal that X makes one Y or not Y makes one Z. I apologize for making you think it was personal. It was not my intention.

To me, personally, if someone can watch an anime and enjoy it then that's it, they like anime; they're a fan. If after enjoying one, two, or three (the number is arbitrary), and they feel comfortable saying 'I like anime' then I'm not going to tell them they're a liar. I don’t think it’s down to an outside party to judge, I think that should be on the person in question. They decide what they are and are not a fan of.

Not that I think it matters, anyway. I know this is a topic that gets brought up a lot in the anime community: what makes an anime fan? To which you get the textbook replies of 'Oh, if they only watch the popular shounen they don't count', and the classic ridiculous number requirements of 'Oh, any less than 50-1000 and they're not a fan at all' but at the end of it all I'd have to ask 'Why does it matter?'.

Is being a 'fan' some sort of prestigious ranking, the likes of which attaining would be very worthwhile? When is determining whether or not someone's a fan of anime ever going to be important to anything? The only reason I ever see whether someone is actually a 'fan' or not brought up, is so one person can snobbishly look down their nose at another person and act like an elitist prick, as if the fact that they’ve watched more of something makes them an inherently better person.

You can throw around meaningless statistics like ‘number watched’, ‘time spent’, and ‘money blown’ but at the end of the day what does any of it matter? Where is the use in determining a statistic which makes one person a fan, and another a 'liar' (I put 'liar' in quotations, because I also find the concept of a 'fake fan' infuriatingly pretentious as well)? Ultimately it's impossible to accurately gauge on some sort of chart, anyway, and I think someone saying 'I like anime', assuming they've watched it, should be more than enough.

Man, I sound a tad on edge, but I'm not; I just find the topic as silly as the likes of the console wars. At the end of the day it's a meaningless dick-measuring competition over who can enjoy something more, and it makes no sense to me. I think if someone's into anime they'll tell you, they won't need be banking on you playing Inspector Clouseau to pick apart the breadcrumbs they leave behind.

they're into anime if they like anime shows
they're not into anime if they're not into anime shows

to be more specific (all of the below are into anime)

they're new to anime if they watched less than 50 anime series
they're a "casual" fan if they watched less than 300 anime series
they're an "invested" fan if they watched less than 1000 series
they're an "otaku" if they watched at least 2000 series

i'm a casual. :p

I understand. The whole thing is very controversial, but I don't mean anything bad; just curious!

I like that watching anime for over a decade hasn't been enough to get me out of these casual brackets.

I think the OP requirement of "They have to at least be keeping up with new Anime that airs every season" is pretty ridiculous.

In my opinion being an anime fan is not hard, you start out as a fledgling fan and then become a dedicated fan.

In order for me to consider someone a fledgling - They have to have seen and enjoyed more than 1 anime.
In order for me to consider someone an actual full fledged dedicated anime fan in addition to the requirement for a fledgling fan -They must be looking for more anime and have marathon-ed at least 1 anime series. (I'm joking but I think all anime fans eventually marathon a few shows.)

I personally have at least 500 anime dvds, some vhs, and some blu-ray and have watched much more than I personally own. I wouldn't consider someone else a lesser anime fan just because they just started watching anime and only have a couple of series under their belt or their shows weren't to my taste; we all start somewhere and if they enjoy it they are a fan.

Ok, to be a Otaku means that you've watched at least 2.000 series. For me that would mean that I've watched at least 3 episodes a day since I'm 3 years old. A lot more when a series has more than 12 episodes.
Therefore I'm proud of not being an Otaku .

Requirements: they like anime. They watch it.

That was easy.
