Humanity has lots of potential, but I'm honestly not optimistic about our long-term future. The financial crisis of 2008 demonstrated how fragile our current economic system is. Life seems to have gotten much harder since the recession for most folks I know. Those who were asked to do the work of two people for the same pay due to layoffs are still doing the work of two people because it is cheaper. Increasing automation and competition for labor from developing countries that we can't possibly compete against wage-wise continues to put strain on the economy. Political and social unrest are common across the globe, and many economists fear that another recession is on the way.

The future is impossible to predict, but I fear we'll end up having a world like Mad Max instead of a world like Star Trek. Who knows? Maybe things will work out in the end and stability will come about. But I don't see that happening. We could eventually have a world like Star Trek, but collectively as a species, we don't seem to want it.

I was wondering what do Crunchyrollers think of humanity's future. Will it be more like Star Trek or Mad Max? Personally, I think Mad Max. Between environmental ruin, superbugs antibiotics can't kill, religiously driven terrorism and the constant threat of nuclear arms, I forsee disaster. Discuss.

Nope none of it. It'll be like "Childhoods End". The eradication and extermination of the planet by the race that achieved interstellar travel first, in order to keep the peace. Namely, no other star faring race except them. Either that or Jesus surprises everyone by coming back. Oh crap it's the rapture!!! Nowhere to run and hide! Big J works for the almighty!! And he isn't happy with "Family Guy" although he may fancy anime because anime doesn't bother ridiculing religion, hmm Big J might like Tora Dora. Anyways...what was I going on about?

Hoping for the best, so Star Trek, but anticipating the next big social/financial crash. As it is the only thing that is clear is that the system will burn pretty bad long term. Question is what will come to be after the breakdown. Will humanity be able to drastically change itself after burning its hands even worse? We'll see.

Oh and now I had to google to fresh up my memory: Star Trek predicts a 3rd World War that will go from 2026 to 2053, mass genocide, nuclear cataclysm, hundreds of millions of dead people, utter destruction of pretty much all major cities. Anything horrible humanity has managed until now, upped by a few orders of magnitude.
The whole Utopia in the 24th century is build on the memory of that hell on earth.

So actually, I'd hope reality will be BETTER than Star Trek, although long term I somehow think the idea that a "ups we just killed half of our population in a stupid war"-situation would make humans a lot more sane sounds very... logical.

I'll go with a future that looks more like The Night's Dawn trilogy - minus the Possessed.

I'd like to say Star Trek and i think there are signs that this could be realistic (maybe not all the aliens) but i think mad max is more likely. Due to the ones in power and greed.
Also due to the divide that race and particulary religion will forever cause.

We as a culture seem to have decided to go with Demolition Man as the future. At least the near future.

I WISH it was like Star Trek. By the TNG era the Federation had produced a near utopia, where no one on Earth was forced to work, currency wasn't exchanged, food was replicated and always nutritionally complete, and violence was nearly eradicated. Sounds boring? Maybe, but think of all the holodecks. :9

That said, I'm not really sure. I think if we could prolong this planet before decay, we could have technology akin to Star Trek, minus the antimatter warp cores and pure energy replication, but if we can't, maybe it will end up like a post apocalyptic desert one day. Lol.

Yes! Maybe the replicants are already among us. ;p Either way, augmentation is definitely part of our current / near future.

Neither - Humanity's future is the Imperium of Man!

***

It is the 41st Milenium. For more than a hundred centuries the Emperor has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Earth. He is the master of mankind by the will of the gods, and master of a million worlds by the might of his inexhaustible armies. He is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with power from the Dark Age of Technology. He is the Carrion Lord of the Imperium for whom a thousand souls are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die.

Yet even in his deathless state, the Emperor continues his eternal vigilance. Might battlefleets cross the daemon-infested miasma of the warp, the only route between distant stars, their way lit the Astronomican, the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's will. Vast armies give battle in His name on uncounted worlds. Greatest amongst his soldiers are the Adeptus Astartes, the Space Marines, bio-engineered super-warriors. Their comrades in arms are legion: the Astra Militarum and countless planetary defence forces, the ever-vigilant Inquisition and the tech-priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from aliens, heretics, mutants - and worse.

To be a man in such times is to be amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be re-learned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the far future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsty gods.

***

For the Emperor!

We'll work towards Star Trek, run out of resources, and revert to Mad Max.

Personally though I'd like it to be Waterworld but whatever
