Go research a bit more about bits and codes within how a computer(ai) operates- he's not worried that Irobot will happen lol he's afraid of what people can and will use it for I.e. if the creators of the A.I are dumb enough to give it commands that would threaten themselves. Seeing as we cannot recreate consciousness, currently, even if we give a computer "sentience" and the ability to "perceive itself" it wouldn't really be conscious in the same sense we are. It'd be virtually conscious but in actuality it'd be as simple as bits. You might say- "well that's exactly like a human brain" and you're right, but missing out on the bigger picture that we are biological lifeforms trading/sending our biological data and resources to all other biological functions within our bodies to the smallest bits within that of an organism called cells. We really haven't fully grasped the main specialty of this hence our conundrum "what is consciousness" "if we give a robot the ability to perceive itself and absorb information and infer as it goes(such as we've defined consciousness) will it be consciousness?" if you have to ask... need I say more? No that robot is not going to start feeling emotions kek. Our brain is different kind of computer if you will, DNA is a different way to map out data and implement it, both of which far outdate our current technology both in the sense that it has been in the makings for millions of years to obtain the instinct built within it and that it far exceeds our current scientific knowledge- For instance if we could utilize the sun's photons the same way chlorophyll does we'd theoretically never run out of energy. So in conclusion our brain is biological in nature not as simple(in fact it's insulting to nature giving us sentience to suggest as much) that it's just piece of machinery and our consciousness is just the ability to comprehend and perceive. So with that in mind, the only problem with AI is the fact humans will use it as a weapon, then we have issues. Imagine a supercomputer giving you guidance in a battlefield? That kind of assistance would literally change how war is waged like the invention of explosive powder and a firearm. I mean the computer could pick up on simple things like probability that specific areas will be attacked, where wars will break out.

Now if we use it for weather, or scientific purposes such as space exploration or species classification and studies nobody has an issue- however the discovery of the atom lead to the nuclear bomb so we know how this plays out. Stephen Hawking said what he said in context to nature's destructive tendencies and that we are beings of said nature derived through many destructive events of which has translated into a intrinsic survival mentality(kill or be killed)- not that AI will become Ultron/I-robot/skynet

I swear, people treat everything Hawking says as if it's the word of God. Justifiably so, maybe, but still. He could say any old shit, like Polar Bears are secretly plotting an attack against humans, and we'd believe him.

And will people take any notice? Of course not. We'll all just kill ourselves for the sake of ridiculous things we don't need like robot servants and VR.

His warning falls on deaf ears, unfortunately. Even though he is very well-respected, people will still continue what they are doing. The most he can hope for is the right to say "I told you so!" when it happens.
