While it's been becoming more popular, it seems like anime is generally poorly regarded by those that don't watch it. In many cases it seems this is for unfair reasons stemming from ignorance (a common reason being that, because hentai exists, all anime is assumed to be hentai - granted, the prevalence of fan service and panty shots doesn't help that case, but not every show does that stuff).

So, of media that is maligned, is anime the one that is most commonly maligned for things it doesn't do?

Well sorry for liking those things

Hey, all I said was that they don't help when you're trying to convince people that anime isn't hentai.
I don't think there's anything wrong with liking those things, though they don't really do much for me.

My only real issue with them is that their inclusion causes a lot of shows that I'd otherwise love to recommend to people to instead be placed on my "do not mention or recommend unless you wish to be a pariah" list.

I mean, even a lot of people I know that watch anime, mostly stick to the more mainstream stuff that actually gets/got air time in the US... I don't want to be the guy telling them to watch the "hentai", so to speak. I don't want people thinking I'm that creepy old guy that likes seeing cartoon girls' panties or something.

It's even worse if I'm considering introducing anime to someone that hasn't given it a chance before, to be limited to shows that avoid these things. I find it unfortunate, because like I said, it doesn't do much for me and in most cases I feel it only adds a few laughs to a show. I guess I'd say that from that point of view, the cost of having these things might outweigh the benefit? Obviously, many would disagree with me, though!

Now that the media is heavily focused on anti bullying I don't really come across that much hate on nerd fandoms anymore. It really doesn't seem that significant.

The thing that I hate the most, is I know so many people that would love certain shows or movies if they gave them a shot.
As a social experiment, I once described the plot of Tokyo Godfathers to my mother and her two sisters without saying it was anime. They said it sounded like a spectacular film and they would love to see it. Then I said it was anime, and they said they would never watch it.
I just don't get it.

I'm predicting it right now: anime (and video game) adaptions are the next big thing.
Not long from now, we'll be watching big-budget, live-action, American-made One Piece movies and stuff.

You mean like DB Evolution?
That's terrifying!

It's honestly because a lot of people fit under the definition of weeaboo and the actual definition of an otaku, which is negative. Then there's the fact that a lot of people prefer ecchi fanservice over quality stories which is why a lot more ecchi shows are selling like nothing and where the whole "anime is porn" thought comes from. Also, as long as you know the actual definition of a weeb it shouldn't offend you too much either way because chances are, you're not really a weeb. Unless you denounced your culture for that of the Japanese, you're not a weeb, so why let something that doesn't apply to you offend you anways?0

Then there's the fact that a lot of people in the anime community are crybaby bitches and let's be real, people like to fuck with sensitive people, and personally, I've met A LOT of sensitive as anime fans on here alone.

Anime has a lot more exposure these days compared to before. Before people didn't know nearly as much about it but now the majority know what it is and have an idea of what it's about in general. While it may seem that anime is viewed as a "bad" thing by the non anime people I think that's largely due to the exposure of it. Of course if more people know about anime it's going to have more haters. At the same time though it feels like anime is far more accepted in this day and age than before. It used to be less known back in my day and those who did know of it regarded it was a waste of time or looked down upon it. At least now people see it as a hobby of sorts for the most part.

As with everything else though, there's good press and bad press.

hmm.. you don't want to say how many animes compared to movies some are quite better? (much more on the story and sometimes content)
You can have a 3rd perspective and view on cases crimes/war/love and so on.
that means we can go into how a character thinks, responds to said actions and how they develop.

and much, much more..

Stereotypes exist for a reason and anime has on more than one occasion provided adequate fuel

THere's stereotypes in every fandom. With anime, it's probably more due to people's reluctance to read subtitles or the fact that animation is still heavily looked down as something for children in the West or something more for comedy (Family Guy/South Park/Simpsons)...and then you got the crowd who only recognizes anime as 'POKEMON/YUGIOH' or porn.

Since this is about anime...and I love my fellow fans....sorry but sometimes anime fans deserve the shit we get...

but I would say the MLP fans are probably the ones that get the most crap from people...I'm not a fan of MLP myself, but most fans I know are normal, everyday folks and then you get the Bronies who want to f**k horses or sleep with their horse waifus that ruin it for everyone else.
