ANN may have fascistic Mods that make sure we play nice and don't pick on other posters, so you may have thought you were safe, but it's a little more wild-West over on this board:
Start playing the one-subject K-boy act here, and you'll have the other posters here strangling you in a WEEK with impunity...)

Hey I'm not violating the rule on this thread. This is a general discussion thread something ANN didn't have. Didn't I already say I'm never going back to ANN, I'm on a ANN boycott after Zac threaten me for something I didn't do.

As I said, many users left ANN (some well-known users), I wasn't the only one and I don't know why many people left ANN for. But I'm not going back to ANN, not until they apologize and tell me why they threaten me for something I didn't do.

This is getting off topic. Can we get back on topic.

While it's been becoming more popular, it seems like anime is generally poorly regarded by those that don't watch it. In many cases it seems this is for unfair reasons stemming from ignorance (a common reason being that, because hentai exists, all anime is assumed to be hentai - granted, the prevalence of fan service and panty shots doesn't help that case, but not every show does that stuff).

So, of media that is maligned, is anime the one that is most commonly maligned for things it doesn't do?

Well sorry for liking those things

Hey, all I said was that they don't help when you're trying to convince people that anime isn't hentai.
I don't think there's anything wrong with liking those things, though they don't really do much for me.

My only real issue with them is that their inclusion causes a lot of shows that I'd otherwise love to recommend to people to instead be placed on my "do not mention or recommend unless you wish to be a pariah" list.

I mean, even a lot of people I know that watch anime, mostly stick to the more mainstream stuff that actually gets/got air time in the US... I don't want to be the guy telling them to watch the "hentai", so to speak. I don't want people thinking I'm that creepy old guy that likes seeing cartoon girls' panties or something.

It's even worse if I'm considering introducing anime to someone that hasn't given it a chance before, to be limited to shows that avoid these things. I find it unfortunate, because like I said, it doesn't do much for me and in most cases I feel it only adds a few laughs to a show. I guess I'd say that from that point of view, the cost of having these things might outweigh the benefit? Obviously, many would disagree with me, though!

I watch monster Musume on the living room. With my whole family there giving me the WTF looks. My sister doesn't watch anime but she was enjoying herself watching it. I guess I am the type who doesn't give a fuck what others think.

I didn't. I sold it to a friend it for cash, and used that money to buy the books I wanted off Amazon instead.

It's come a long way since the "anime is porn" days

Just be happy, people

i still get the anime is porn thing from folks my age. but then again, the younger folk totally get it.
however, anime is not as maligned as my series of stick figure flipbooks about the hanseatic league. universally panned.
and fan fiction has to be on oft maligned list somewhere.... mine, anyway.

I remember reading fan fiction

My own, when I was proofreading

It's cool that you can do that. I mean, I'm sure my parents wouldn't have stopped me watching something like that, but I don't know that they would have appreciated it.

Monster Musume was a pretty funny show, I think I'd have to know someone's interests fairly well before recommending it though.
By the way, do you watch the *gatari series in the living room? I'm just wondering if your sister enjoyed the toothbrush scene?

I already show that to her. She was giving me the pervert look and a the same time was mesmerize by it. I think I awoken something on her that day. I even show her Eroge to her. Aka adult visual novels. She OK with all the perverted stuff side of me.

Probably because of art-style (which is easy to generalize and the fact that most anime characters still have huge, abnormal eyes), story (there is variety, but there are also flaws in anime stories) and music (it can be hard to get used to listening to anime soundtracks). Some guy said that he didn't like Akira or Naruto because of flaws in story, art or music.

She sounds like a fun sister, might have to beware of awakening any latent fujoshi tendencies, though...

Not around here. Nobody gives it a second thought in Asian communities, haha.

The most hated media is probably reality TV. Then, again, reality TV IS total crap and deserves the hatred.

I don't know if I would say poorly regarded, I would say that most of the time I see non-anime watchers talking about/referring to it they're talking about the perverted aspects thus that's the most visible aspect. Its one of the reasons I hate certain shows that play right into it, while other shows that show how intelligent or mature anime can get aren't given any mention. The sad part is that a lot of shows are actually going in the direction of trying to add fan service, thus only reinforcing the outside view.

Maybe it'll go the way of videogames and eventually become known for the good parts instead of the worst parts. i.e. Once upon a time if you gamed you were referred to as a geek/nerd/basement dweller, now its become something practically everyone does thus that stigma has faded (not gone just faded).
