Like your interest or enjoyment? I've seen a good amount of people say that they're not into a series anymore because "the fandom ruined it for them" or that they won't watch/read/play it for the same reason.

So, can/has a fandom ruined a series for you?

Not really, but it can be aggravating.

The Hetalia fandom makes me kinda not want to like it.

If I enjoy something then I enjoy it. I don't care what other people think, whether they hate it or whether there's a fandom that ecstatically loves it.

If something's already really popular before I watch it or read it, I won't watch or read until either it's died down or sometimes I just never get back around to it. Especially if a lot of people keep telling me to do whatever it is. I didn't watch One Punch Man last season because I was literally being told to watch it every single day by customers at work and by friends and by other people. I was entirely over it by the time the third episode came out and I doubt I'll ever see it now.

If you going to allow yourself to be influenced by what others think versus what you think your experiences, be they real or imaginary, will ultimately lead to more disappointments than joy. With few exceptions ( ie murder, mayhem, pillaging, looting, etc.) if you like or believe in something there is no law out there that states you must conform to the tastes of others if she / he / they disagree. If you like it enjoy it. To hell with what others think.

Fandoms can't ruin franchises per se. But, depending on various circumstances, fandoms can create a taint on a franchise. Just look at MLPFiM.

Inevitably, though, it's all based on individual perspective. Some people are so dedicated to a franchise, such as an anime series, that they will be overwhelmed by a sense of loss when they see fan-work that damages the image of the original work. Basically, everybody's different.

I've never watched Evangelion.
I've SEEN enough isolated clips of the "important moments" to convince me I would never want to, but listening to 00's-generation fans who believe that the sole purpose of anime is to debate Shinji, gasp at the boldness of psychologically messed-up characters or debate the metaphorically theological Meaning of It All, has made me even less curious.

Duh, can you honestly say rabid fanboys/girls don't piss you off?

I never have thought so, until I came across the Sonic fandom.

Some of them gross me out a bit but that doesn't mean i start disliking an anime just because of that. That applies not only to anime just anything i like that has a fandom.
