Post Reply Can fandoms ruin a series for you?
Posted 1/23/16 , edited 1/23/16
Yes and no. If you're around them, your mind can begin to associate the fiction with them. If you had a bad experience or find that person annoying, then it can be a turn off and ruin an otherwise beautiful work for you, but only if you let it.

The last part is key

So true, not sure how someone can ruin something that you like just by liking it to much or hating makes no sense.

Nope. It's either good or not; I don't care what dumb or creepy things some of the "fans" do.

No. I don't care what people do. I mind my own business.

no

it's pretty lame if you don't watch a series just because of the fandom.

I try not to let it bother me, but there were a few times I decided not to come back to a particular series due to some of the people in the fandom, and the fact that I associated the series so closely with them.

In particular, I stopped watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic because of a very small, very rabid subset of the fandom.

* They had very little tolerance for people who believed the show was a work of fiction. (I don't believe the characters are real.)

* They had very little tolerance for people who did not want to participate in the NSFW areas of the fandom, or who believed that there were websites where NSFW content wasn't appropriate. (I was not interested in NSFW pony content.)

* There was one person in particular who bugged me for a year and a half because I would not redraw a pony drawing I did with more characters, for free. (I was not going to do that, I'm sorry.)

I don't believe this is indicative of the entire fandom, but I'll probably still need a little more time to move on from what happened.

Never after I watch a show, but occasionally if the fans are bad enough before I watch a show and post almost exclusively ridiculous things, it can sour my taste. But you know, if I want to watch it enough that doesn't matter.

Fucking yes. It's like British invasion all over again with Dr. Who and Sherlock fans. Those bitches act like it's a microcosm of real life in the UK. But honestly, I really do like Sherlock.

Sherlock i've never seen, but it's not as bad as the other shows where the thirsty sex starved fangirls are the only thing keeping it on the air

No. If it's good and I love it then that's that. People are people, and they will annoy you. That's something you can't change. But bottom line, things cost money to produce something. So you can feel like something is special and only you know about it but unless you're gonna' shovel out the money it takes to produce that something, it's meaningless. So I'm actually happy when something I love gains popularity because that means I get to enjoy it longer.
