Nope. I think people who are bothered by that are stupid.

They can sometimes. Doctor Who fans are so obsessive that the show kind of irritates me at this point. That's really the only one that's coming to mind.

If I like a series, then I encounter the fandom crazies, nah. I just shake my head at their stupidity (or, rather, my perception of their stupidity) and continue enjoying the show.

If I have NOT watched the series, a fandom can (and has) make me not WANT to watch it, yeah.

For example, Steven Universe. I had never watched it, and the fandom seemed full of rabid Tumblrinas, all saying how "Steven Universe is OUR show" and how it "promotes trans*/gay/whatever issues" and so on and so forth. The fandom itself made me think that the show must be some kind of Tumblr-sponsored utopian series, which totally put me off the prospect of watching it.

It wasn't until some of my sane friends talked about how hilarious the series was that I actually gave it a chance (and saw that those Tumblrinas were full of shit). It was a decent show, despite it's Tumblr fanbase. Not really one of my favorites, but not bad by any means.

So, yeah. I do think that a fanbase can have a very profound effect on people's decisions to watch a show, and I could see the possibility of a fanbase possibly "ruining" a show for some individuals. (Most notably if the fanbase has any direct effect on storyboard decisions, usually via activism.)

[EDIT]
Think of the inverse question--can a fandom influence your decision to like or start watching a series?

This will be easy for most of you to answer; of course it does. The fandom gets the word out there, says how awesome a thing is, often shows clips or images of it, and generally tells you how awesome it is. It's actually how I started watching most of my non-adult-swim anime back when Adult Swim was where I got virtually ALL of my anime fix.

It's also how I started watching (and loving) My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, which is a show that I NEVER would have watched without the fandom promoting it.

I've met some very vindictive Sailor Moon collectors. I've dealt with a lot of collectors during my tenure as an art collector, but the ones that go after cels hold serious grudges. I've known people who have harbors grudges for years, and will happily jack up the price if they know you're bidding on it out of spite.

Kinda stopped collecting Sailor Moon cels because of this.

Why would I let a group of people stop me from liking something.

Yes they have and will continue to ruin series for me. The most notable through my life was Death Note. I am all for enjoying a series but at times it felt like there was a damn near religion surrounding L. Maybe it was the fact that the only Death Note Cosplay I saw for a year was L. I am one to not really appercaite lazy costumes. I do not know.. either way I did nto watch Death Note till it had been out for at least 5 years. Do not get me wrong when I watched the series I could enjoy it but.... I mean... yeah I just cannot stand obsessive BS like what I saw in the first throws of Death Note.

I find that I am hit with a lot of modern American Cartoons which have been.. uhh.... taken over by the fandom as well. I find that it is hard to take something seriously whenever I see some stoned princess or stoned character... I do not know but that is my problem is that fandoms do not make sense sometimes. I mean I do my best to be open-minded... but it is hard when I cannot make sense out of the fandom. Maybe I jut have high standards... I do not know.. but it does suck when I want to enjoy something and I cannot because the fandom makes me sick.

So yeah, I find that the fandom can ruin anything for anyone. I do encourage keeping and open mind... but that can be hard when you see a bunch of 30 year olds pretending they are children. I do not know... it is just hard to enjoy something when I am lumped in with crap.

Guren Lagann & Attack on Titan. Kill la Kill to some degree although I never got into it.

Pretty much when an okay show gets overhyped and people try to shove it down your throat like it's the best thing ever. Basically, things that sound too much like Justin Bieber or a religious cult.

I don't mind actually great stuff getting a lot of hype. Like SAO or Death Note.

Yep. Manga fans are always carelessly spoiling my anime and it ruins it some times. I've accepted that most of them cant help but discuss it everywhere they can but there is always that one guy that doesn't give any warning. The worst are the ones who answer rhetorical questions with them dank spoilers though.

Sherlock i've never seen, but it's not as bad as the other shows where the thirsty sex starved fangirls are the only thing keeping it on the air

I wouldn't mind obsessive Who fans, if they were the kind of obsessive Who fans who knew that the Classic 60's-70's series ever EXISTED, or who showed any remote interest in versions of the show made before they discovered it?

Specifically, those New-Who fans raised on the 9+ Doctors, who think the show is all about the modern empowered Companion, and the sexy, sophisticated romantic relationship she has with her hot, planet-hopping alien date...
(Anybody want to show them Jamie, Zoe or Adric? )

I think they can change your perception of something and mostly not for the better. Best to avoid becoming too involved in fandoms.

The Attack on Titan fandom was a nightmare, by far my worst fandom experience.

No, if people are being idiots, I typically don't read what they say past the point of finding out that they are, in fact, idiots.

No, but they can ruin my perception of fandoms in general.

It's not like people ruin it for me. It's just my enthusiasm on stuff doesn't synchronized with their enthusiasm on stuff.

Only my sibling gets me.
