Actually, for you to understand japanese slightly better when studying is to understand English and Chinese. Especially Chinese, because their Kanji characters are mainly from there. The meanings don't stray too far away from the actual language, just that they have very different pronounciations. English, because well, informal japanese make use of a lot of katakana-made up words of English. Makes your life a tad easier to live as well. But of course, Chinese is probably the hardest language to learn.

Weird enough, knowing Scottish Gaelic makes the understanding of Japanese grammatical structure little easier.

Hmmm...well Japanese writing system was (partially maybe) derived form the Chinese so it doesn't surprise me much....as some of the characters are written and mean the same thing...Chinese learning...depends really on the individual as to saying and pronouncing it. but writing and stuff...they can get that easier. ^^

I really hope that "understanding anime" isn't the only reason that you or anyone else would want to learn Japanese. It would take a HELL of a long time to learn the language so fluently that you could watch "un-subbed anime". By the time you knew the language that well, you would probably have different intrests that didn't include watching anime; therefore it would be a waste of your time cause that's the only reason you wanted to learn the language in the first place. And, sorry to say, it's practically impossible to learn and understand more than a couple words, scentences, or phrases in Japanese using only the internet. You'll pick up a few things, but I doubt you'll be anywhere NEAR being able to understand the entire fluent language. That's what actual Japanese classes are for.

Japanese is not an easy languague to learn. I think studying it online is hopeless, even if you're an absolute genius. I would say that to understand anime and dorama without subs, you probably need 2-3 years of intensive study in Japan or else 6-8 years abroad. About kanji, if you don't learn kanji you'll have an extremely hard time learining the spoken languague beyond a rudimentary level. Kanji seem to scare people, but they actually help you learn the languague. It's the very complicated grammar and the very wide lexicon that make Japanese so difficult...
Still, if you want to know only enough Japanese to get by in Japan, a year of study abroad or about six months of study in Japan should be more than enough.
