Schadenfreude - I want to see you fail
Posted 1/24/16
We've all felt it, some more than others. It is arguably the main reason for trolling on the internet, and it's steadfast decline in recent years, many have sworn off facebook for the degree of drama on there. It is a problem, but not one easily solved. Its even being encouraged steadfast at a geometric rate. Ignoring it doesn't work anymore. Its getting worse, and attempts to explain it are anecdotal and a band-aid at best:

www.theguardian.com/media/2013/aug/03/how-to-stop-trolls-social-media‎

https://www.reddit.com/.../why_is_trolling_and_flaimbaiting_encouraged_on/‎

forums.na.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=905457‎

The problem isn't solved on an individual basis because its systemic. This is where the First Amendment gets misread and abused because some think it means you can say and get away with anything. Tbh the only permanent solution is to raise awareness and to break the tolerance for it, and not give it a place to thrive. A surprising number of mass murders where people were bullied had an internet component,, we're breeding killers.

www.utc.edu/faculty/joseph-kizza/docs/...support.../chapter5.ppt‎

I'm skeptical whenever someone offers a band-aid to a universal pestilence that is this shamelessly negative. We should make them take sensitivity classes. Its become a global pasttime and recreational entertainment because the coorespondence isn't by mail or telephone, but electronic, with computers.

I made this for others. I don't give a shit. But I'd like to study criminal psychology to formulate ways to deal with this nuissance. We need to address this in a mature and less permissive tone and find more effective strategies ...

I've noticed a lot of people think someone disagreeing is a "troll". Just because they don't agree with what you said doesn't make them a troll lol. I've asked people political questions that were sincere and I get blocked by people.
Some people are just sensitive. While there are people who go out of their way to upset someone or be dumb.
In my opinion I think the best way to stop trolling is for people to understand they should just not feed the troll.

That doesn't work anymore. It has become so endemic that everyone is a troll. Yes, people misuse troll for anything, like "extremist", etc. Ignoring it is a band-aid, though. The problem is only fixed after the damage is done.

As for sensitivity, its a scapegoat for being victimized is what it is. You get victimized because you broke the forbidden code of conduct, and that's not okay. Sensitivity is to blame for anothers transgressions? No, I refuse to believe that. It's ridiculous.

It's worked in my experiences, when I block someone trying to get me upset, or i ignore them I never worry about it. There's a lot of other stuff that deserves my worry and attention. It is funny to watch someone trying to troll and it get turned around on them though.

Also I didn't quite understand what you were saying about the sensitivity thing sorry.

My sentiments exactly. The definition of "troll" has had some unnecessary amendments.

Problem is isn't the victim, but the troll. If you do that, he'll move on and victimize someone else. Have seen it firsthand quite a bit.

That's the state of it, I'm afraid. No choice but to leave for some. And we attribute the problem to them.

I see, I was referring more to the people who get up in arms if anyone slightly challenges or questions something they posted.

We have a good grasp on what exactly is "trolling" whenever this forum brings out the "fishing"meme. Ohh, if only a good few years' worth of posters on Usenet, back in the day, could have so easily grasped the basic concept that maybe Bad People On the Internet were not all they appeared to be.

As for the proliferation on Facebook and social media, that's what you get for trying to get all your Net content in one convenient one-stop-shopping location.
It's the Youtube Comments factor: The more universal the access, and the more undefined the topic, the more riff-raff you'll get wandering in off of the anonymous locations.
(Just look at the disparity between CR General and Anime threads: What kind of person has nothing in particular to talk about, and tries to stay in conversations anyway?)

it's true, a very unfortunate one, though i wouldn't call it particularly schadenfreude.
the internet is a reflection of the world we live in, so to change it, is to change the people.

If someone needs to see someone else fail then they have already failed and become a parasite.
I don't envy anyone that is so dependant on strangers that they can't make themselves happy.
