Well we are in the Goldilocks zone. We're looking for organic life similar to ours, but who's to say there aren't some extreme life forms out there. Anyway, it would be upsetting to find evidence of an alien civilization past.

In galactic time scales, even 10 million years is an eyeblink. Whole civilisations could have come and gone and we would never know.

Statistically the chance of there being other life is absurdly high. There is an extremely small chance though that we have made contact or even been discovered by an alien species.

Also there is a huge difference between intelligent alien life and just plain alien life. Finding another evolved and intelligent life among the stars and finding them in a relatively (we're talking tens of thousands of years of searching) quickly would be extremely difficult.

Assuming intelligent alien life just happened to wander up to our world and see it they would most likely either ignore us or conquer us. I'd put my bets on being conquered.

Sooooo I'd recommend us not really going looking for aliens quite yet. Let's focus on, I dunno, getting off the damn planet, finding a solution to Faster Than Light travel, establishing a naval military to protect us from the incoming asteroids and potential alien threat, and sequencing genome for cat and fox girls/boys.
