HxH fans are good example of this. They're adamant about the show being the greatest thing just because it has no filler.

Eh, I don't think that french fries analogy works.

Disliking a fandom is to dislike how a specific group typically acts, because of the way they usually celebrate or defend the show or whatever. We're not talking about some jackass who just also happens to like something you do. We're talking about a large group with similar behavior directly related to liking a certain thing. Behavior that others never do if they're not fans.

Attraction to cartoon ponies from a certain show, for example. Or Whovians talking in fake British accents, wearing union jacks, and praising England. When you dislike a fandom, that's the thing you dislike -- the thing directly related to the show -- not that they're bad tippers, or that they're lazy during group projects or something.

The question isn't really "Can you dislike someone who likes one thing you do?"

It's "Can you hate a fandom while at the same time being that fandom?" And while that's also obviously possible, the question is more about hypocrisy, and which fans are "good" or "bad", and who are "real" fans or "posers." What is a "real" gamer, for example? Is it just elitism to think your way of enjoying or celebrating a show is right, while the majority is annoying and childish? Maybe. Maybe not.

Discuss.

I suppose so. It depends how the majority of the fandom act. So far the only fandoms I really hate are for things I don't like

Although fandoms are something significant in a franchise, what matters most is the original source material, whether it's a show, movie, game, book, whatever medium. So, you should still be able to enjoy a franchise and be able to ignore fandoms. Maybe the problem is that if you're experiencing the source material, you may get a reminder in the back of your head about what its fan-base has created out of it, which could lead to paranoid feelings, such as feeling self-conscious.

I still think MLPFiM is dubious, though. I don't think I can sit through the show without being self-conscious, being reminded of some of the sh!t the fan-base created. Plus, despite MLPFiM being aimed towards "girls and their fathers", the MLP franchise has always been driven towards girls, so despite MLPFiM's attempts at a wider audience, the heritage of the franchise remains unchanged.....so, what I'm saying here is that I wouldn't watch MLPFiM due particularly to how it's still a girl's show.

I know I brought up MLPFiM in another thread concerning this topic about fandoms, but for some reason I can't think of any other notable franchise that has a similar phenomena.

Oh but it looks like PV brought it up, too....but also mentioned another important one, bolded for emphasis by me...

Yes. Case in point, Bronies, Steven Universe....

I've heard of Steven Universe. I saw a video on it last night, and it seems like it's a good show. But before that, I heard about a chick who was bullied towards suicide because of some "problematic" fan-art she created. But, that's all I know about the overall fan-base of Steven Universe, and I don't think that would be too much of a taint on the image of the original source material....plus, I heard the developers of the show stepped in to defend the chick who was being bullied for her art (though I could be wrong).

If someone loves a show, they're part of the fandom. Some are blind to their conundrum, and inadvertently "hate" themselves.

I can't say hating a fandom you belong to is wrong, but just understand your position and think about it a little deeper.

Is the typical (or in some cases, stereotypical) fan of your favourite franchise hurting or helping it? Does a particular group deserve criticism and shame, or are they harmlessly annoying because of some certain pet peeve (people who ship everything, for example)? Are you maybe being elitist by believing you're a "true" or "hardcore" or "original" fan compared to younger newcomers? Etc.

You might have different answers depending on each fandom, but consider them at least.

You see it all the time in the gaming world, and it goes back to that "hurting or helping" question. If someone likes a game you play, does it matter how they play and celebrate it, or what attitude they bring to it, as long as they're keeping it popular and relevant? People hate on "casuals," "try-hards," and whatever other silly thing based on how they think other people should play. But are they hurting the community, or are they preserving and advancing it?

And so on...

Just something to think about.

Yes. As an example, I love the fate series, the anime and the visual novel. But I have serious disdain for the fanbase.

Yes, because some people need to voice their love for it..... Oh my god just stop! You want to voice your opinion, buy the Anime, or buy the show and merchandise, and just shut it!

I don't mind video reviews of shows, or Animes, I dont mind panels, or conventions, or things like that, but I hate when people get in other peoples faces about it, like you need to know!!!! its like when you think someone is breathing on the back of your neck, like nobody likes that, so stop LOL.

Had no problems with it being a girlish show. It still has it's moments I think anyone can enjoy. FiM that is. Saw bits of the older series and felt the desire to purge. I can definitely relate to the first part though. I used to enjoy it here and there, and some of the mild fans are actually kind of funny. It's just the really perverse fuckers that make me feel uncomfortable watching the show. I could probably compartmentalize if I tried, but I just don't know if I have the desire to do so.

I don't care if you're a sick twisted idiot about anything as long as it stays in your basement with the door shut.

Edit: I have no disdain against fandoms aimed at young girls in general though. I like Sailor Moon. I even occaisionally enjoy some SeraMyu.

There's perverse stuff out there sure, but you have to go looking for it. No one is looking to throw it in your face. I've never met an annoying Sailor Moon fan.
