so, when will it be beating a chinese champion? no offense, but beating europe at Go is like beating mexico's all-star basketball team. impressive, but it doesnt exactly make you the best.

In March they'll play the south korean world champion. For now beating "just" an european professional is already quite a feat and leagues above all other Go AIs ever made. But yeah. Very curious to see how it fares against the very best human.

Also this AI does not work at all by just trying all possible moves. As has been said: That is impossible. There are more possible moves to make than atoms in the universe. The AI by google mimics actually pretty well how humans play. It has a system to judge which moves might be the best one and another system to experiement a few moves ahead only based on those good moves. It learned what a good move is basically. Learnt as in "it has a huge pile of numbers that define a complex function and those numbers were tuned to play Go using automatic methods".

And yeah I'd love for them to tackle Starcraft as well. With a 300 APM limit for the AI. Win by strategy, not raw APM.

i agree with you on everything except the "more possible moves to make than atoms in the universe." there are only about 10^768 possible games of Go, and while that is a huge number compared to most things, it pales in comparison to the number of atoms in the universe. there are most likely more atoms in our solar system alone.

Actually the estimate for the number of atoms in the observable universe is estimated to be around 10^82. That might change as scientists learn more about dark matter and energy.

we can't exactly observe the whole universe, and we definitely can't observe the densest things in our universe that make up for the greatest number of those atoms.
