After thinking about it I believe it is the altruistic value built into the anime characters. A character that does not concern others might be no fun to look at. But seriously, how many people can sacrifice themselves for the greater goods of others. For me it really depends on the situation, it is not a yes, or a no at this point. I would like to live for as long as possible.
Koro Sensei from Ansatsu Kyoushitsu is an interesting character to me, he is willing to sacrifice himself for his class, well, before he destroys the world. He got agility, sense of humor, and intelligence.
So anyway, what makes the anime character so great? Let me know what you think.

I guess I like original characters. Who likes typical anime characters unless they parody something? Of course I like "Plot" too (insert meme) But let's be honest. You know you're talking about chests when we're talking plot huh . I mean just look at it.

You know you love it.
Chests in this sense and the way you're thinking (and I am) aside I like characters that aren't incredibly dumb or dense. -angry infinite stratos muttering-

Dynamic characters. That's what's most important.

Personally, I tend to like characters who do the unexpected, and those who have ambiguous ethics and/or morals.

It's all about their dynamics, as lolitaninja said.

"Dynamic character" would probably the best two words to describe it for me.

Dynamic in the sense that the character could actually grow (or devolve) through the course of a story. Another important element is versatility. When I think of great characters, I think of individuals who can entertain me in various ways. Either through action, dialogue (comedy/serious/creepy/etc) or thought process.

A sense of humor, but not obnoxious. Who can't love someone who can crack a good joke?

Outrageousness. Being over-the-top.
