Since avatars and sex indication seem to change all the time, I end up associating it with the user "expressing his/her/whatever's inner maiden." Not necessarily a girl biologically, but closer to that than the alternative.

Wait, PeripheralVisionary is a guy?

I don't know, but whatever his sex may be, I only see his inner maiden about 50% of the time.

Very much in agreement.
And even when the genders mismatch, it's far too easy for me to accidentally lapse into thinking that the avatar gender is their actual gender when hastily replying to them...which is a bad habit of mine that i try to avoid.

with it reversed, what of those who appear with male avatars... I don't really "see" gender online, so they are someone behind the numbers, otherwise that's how it goes for me.

I learn not to judge a netizen simply by their profile information so I would not identify a netizen as a girl just because they have a female avatar. However from last year, I sometimes associate a netizen as a cross-dressing male by their female avatar until I became more familiar with the culture of the anime community.
