SAO, for all intents and purposes, is an extended one-shot.

SAO volume 1 can stand alone by itself. It has a clear beginning and a clear end. Everything after that is an extension

Reki Kawahara does get a lot better in his writing as the series goes on. Goes from a teenage guy writing a short story for a contest to the author of one of the best-selling LNs out there.

He was actually 28 when he first wrote SAO. He's 40 something now.

I swear he was younger

I thought so too, but his Bday is August 17, 1974.

He initially wrote SAO in like 2002/2003. Even if that date is wrong, the first commercially successful MMO was Ultima Online, and SAO borrows from that extensively, but UO came out in 1997, so the youngest he could have been when he wrote SAO was 23.

I must be the minority here. I really liked SAO II, especially Mother's Rosario. Now I really want to read that arc.

Oh man. This thread is so new and exciting.

I've really quite enjoyed the light novels. My only real problem with the anime is that A1 pictures inserted an unnecessary amount of fan service. I feel like one of the reasons that we haven't heard much about an adaptation for Aliciazation is because of the lack of females to get butt and boob close ups on I'm actually really curious to see how they manage to sex up that (huge) arc in the future. It's so male heavy that I just can't really even picture it. But then again, I really didn't picture GGO ending up being one long Sinon ass closeup either!

Don't get me wrong though, I love cute anime girls. I just think that SAO has been adapted with so little tact that it just distracts more than entertains.

So what are you saying? Guys and guy buts aren't sexy?

My opinion is:

SAO eps 1-3 : Hype
SAO eps 4-13 : Not bad, but waaay too cheesy.
SAO eps 14-26 : Why... Oh well, at least we got Sugu's boobs.

SAO II 1st arc : Sinon's Ass Online
SAO II 2nd arc : That was actually pretty fun.
SAO II Last arc : Oh my god, he can write a decent story!

"I'm writing one of the most successful LN series on the market."
"But some Americans who've never read my books think I should stop, so ok I guess."

Yeah, not sure how that rumor started but everyone thought it for a while when SAO was still new over here.

Shows all have their strong points, I feel like drama is a very weak point in the SAO universe. They can do romance and action/fighting well, but these drawn out, slow paced scenes with heavy dialogue don't fit the art and theme at all. They obviously should have formally called everything outside of Aincrad (and maybe even GGO) a spinoff, but its too late for that. Calling the entire series a single story along 1 story line is definitely forcing it.

SAO forced a lot of things.
The first three episodes forced a lot of drama but it was good drama so it gets a pass.
The harem bait episodes were all forced and pointless.
The revival item was forced into the story.
Sinon's ass is forced into our faces.
The sexual assault scenes and bad villain in ALO was forcing us to hate him to an unnecessary degree.
Even the settings (a.k.a Sword Art Online and Gun Gale Online) were forced as Reki Kawahara knew what he wanted the games to be like but didn't stop to consider how they would actually act as games. In other words, why would anyone play SAO when the removal of magic means the only strategy is to bury your sword in their bum. And why would anyone play GGO when it takes 8 months to be high tier when you can't even design your own character design.

Honestly, the various arcs don't even gel as the same story. Its more like a series of short stories that are just carrying over the character names. Which is reinforced further by the changing character designs with each new game. Each new arc always focuses on a new character as well with a hold over character ( typically Kirito, center of the universe ) thrown in as a familiar audience proxy and deus ex machina.

That was worth a good laugh but it ruined any sense of seriousness the show had left.

I mean they were going over a serious plan to defeat this murderer who is threatening their lives... all while Sinon is draped over Kirito and the camera keeps focusing on her ass.

There is no way anyone was going to pay any attention to what they were saying. The show was literally shitting in our faces knowing we would eat it.

My feelings are they should have stopped after it stopped being sword art online, I mean that is the title of the show.

Season 1 first half: Very good and a fantastic anime

Season 1 second half: Oh boy more SAO, although not as good but still great

Season 2 first half : oh...we are still going? Verdict? passable.

Season 2 second half: come on now all suspense and what made SAO great is gone it would have been better if you had just stopped after the SAO arc.

Its a great anime don't get me wrong. but after the SAO and maybe the second arc, the show just went from great to mediocre to just a plain chore to watch.

(all my opinions i will admit some may feel differently and all I ask is you provide ground reason for why you agree or disagree with my views.)

Did you not like Mother's Rosario arc? That was amazing story-wise.

Also, do keep in mind that SAO was originally a .Hack fan-fiction by the author, so of course it's going to have some bumpy inconsistencies with its story. Also I think Accel World was for a contest; that or SAO was.
