When I was a kid I:

I would ride my bike with friends up to the beach on the lake near the city I grew up in
Took swim lessons to prep for the high school swim team
Played a ton of SNES, a lot of hours in Link to the Past
Watched a lot of The Simpsons
Was a Cartoon Network Junkie
Got into anime, mainly through Toonami
Stayed up until midnight to watch the Midnight Run on Toonami, feeling like a badass to see Gundam Wing uncut
Saw my first movie at the theater, Aladdin
Had the orange Nickelodeon VHS tapes
Owned TMNT 1 on VHS, didn't have the second so always rented it
Had an original grey Gameboy which I played Pokemon: Yellow version on
Learned about science from Magic School Bus
Played a ton of Oregon Trail
Got excited when my parents bought Lunchables
Had a walkman

I played on my Nintendo 64.

When I was a kid, my dog and I had only one toy between us, and it was a stick. So was my dog. And something about "uphill both ways," I dunno. . .

I used to shoot crawdads with my pellet gun.
Good times.

I studied a lot during my childhood by parents who were convinced that this was the only way to get ahead in life. I took honors classes, volunteered an insane amount of hours in my community, with any spare time I had filled with extracurricular activities. My summers were filled with more studying and classes. I took college classes in high school at a time when that was unheard of.

My parents were right, though, and I do substantially less work now as an adult than I did as a kid.

When I was a kid all I want to do is study.

Now, all I want to do is be lazy.

For those of you saying you were happier when you were younger, I wonder if that was really the case? Human memories are not very accurate, and it is easy to think of situations differently when you are at a completely different stage in your development. If you could jump backwards in time to when you thought you were happy, would that happiness really exist, or is it an illusion you create for yourself based on present dissatisfaction?

This post isn't aimed at anyone in particular; it's just something I think about every now and then.

When I was a kid it was a completely different world, at least it would be for every one here reading my feckless meandering. I grew up in a very small town in FL (at least it was when I was little) Cocoa Beach. Most days when I got home from school I would grab my board and walk across A1A and surf for a couple hrs with my buds and future girl friends, started surfing when I was 5 yrs old.Back then I don't remember many people locking doors except on stores. To give some kind of a time line without giving up a date in time, there were no push button phones that's right DIALS, no pagers damn sure no cell phones, the closest thing to it was Capt. Kirk's flip open communicator. If you needed to talk to some one you either called from home or dropped a dime in a pay phone and no kid I knew would waste a dime on a phone call when that dime would buy a cold drink and a candy bar...Yea no shit.
Was I happy then...DAMN STRAIGHT....Was I happier....Not really it was just a different world.

When I was a kid I used to see magic everywhere and in every thing. Now I can only get glimpses of that magic. Sometimes in a good movie or book or just a certain location and it makes me sad to know how much we've had to give up in order to grow up. But then that magic will hit me really hard and I'll realize that it's still there, just different and we haven't quite lost it after all. It just takes a little more effort to find sometimes is all.
