So I'm sure that this topic has been discussed numerous times before, but since I don't frequent the forums that much I haven't seen any. But this is something that I keep seeing in anime, and I'll be honest, I'll completely stop watching if they censor anything unless the show is really interesting.

Here's my main butthurt argument though: What's the point of giving us the option to turn the 'Mature' filter on/off and having our ages if you're just going to censor anyways? I'm 24. I can handle anything that you censor. At least you can be like My Wife is the Student Council President and give us both the censored/uncensored option. You can make it to where only Premium members can view uncensored shows, or if it's a cost issue, give the option to where we can pay an extra $5/month for uncensored stuff. Have it as part of a type of Premium package for age verification or something along those lines.

Really, censorship just annoys me in general. It's boobs/underwear. It's blood. We come across one of the two at some point in our lives.

afaik CR only has the right to have the (licensed) shows available online, and the right to add subtitles.
they don't change the content itself afaik. meaning: if the original source was censored, then the one available in CR will also be censored.

yeah, the problem is in Japan, not with CR. Cr only gets whay japan releases, and thats the censored version. usualy its the dvds that get the uncensored. sad thing is, even if i wanted to buy the uncensored veresion, im not sure my dvd player will play dvd from japan. not to mention no legal subtitles.
japan has too many old people.

Hmm... I'm surprised I haven't seen this topic in a while. But yes, like the others have said CR only gets what's also released in Japan. If it's censored there, it'll be censored here. It's got nothing to do with money, or the mature filter.

The maturity filter primarily exists because some of the platforms we have apps for have strict rules. It only really affects immediate availability on apps.

As for the availability of "uncensored" content in general:
We receive the same material as the Japanese TV stations, which are under some pressure to tone down content in order not to draw the ire of the independent watchdogs commenting on TV content. This is one of the reasons why the master they/we receive already has censoring.
At the point the series is airing, no "better" version exists for distribution yet. The better versions, which are both uncensored and often visually improved in general, are produced for the disc release as a further sales argument.
This means that we'd only be able to get that material, if we had the rights to a disc release, or if a disc publisher gave it to us. Disc rights are expensive, and the pricing does not work well with our premium pricing, and why would a disc publisher give us better material that is a big sales factor for their upcoming release of the series? If the series is at a point in its life cycle where uncensored availability on the stream will not dent their disc sales any more, it is entirely possible that we might be able to acquire such content (often including the dubbed version nowadays).

On this subject, I'm a bit curious why CR never obtained an uncensored version of Recently, My Sister is Unusual, given that it is one of a few series that CR does hold home video rights for (and later sub-licensed to Discotek).

I'm not privy to the details of licensing deals. It may not have been an option to have a highly obscured show like that online uncensored for digital distribution. From the Japanese side, that is.

This is actually one of the shows that led me to making this thread. The other being the show I'm watching now, A Dark Rabbit has Seven Lives, which so far has only censored some gore. Again though, the gore really isn't that bad compared to, ya know, Gantz or Corpse Party. It does make sense though what you guys have all said about this subject. I really don't know much about the inner workings of Crunchyroll, so this is all pretty nice information to have.

On the topic of Recently, My Sister is Unusual, I really don't get why they have the scenes censored on that. I've read the manga and Googled the scenes that were censored and they are all really tame. There aren't any nipples shown, and just a few yuri scenes.

As someone earlier in the topic said, the old people really need to go away. This actually isn't the first time I've come across someone saying this about the businesses in Japan either. Apparently the old people in that country are hellbent on keeping things traditional and old-fashioned.

It's not about being prudish or anything, it's about selling more DVDs.
