If you think about it, it is strange how people comment "Uhg, its such fan service" whenever a girl is hot or sexy or a sexy occurrence within the show, however if you think about it, the literal meaning of the word "Fan service" is bringing a service to fans, is which case, would that be a purpose of a show or any show in general?
I mean any show even if theres no sexual occurrence, its a service to the fans right?
Plus this word isnt only to be brought in the terms of sexual and arousal occurrence due to its literal meaning, however even when brought to the occurrence of arousal and sexual. and it succeeds in gaining viewers and attention, then as entertainers, their doing their job.
also if it really upsets you that theres a lack of story then as entertainers they failed to entertain you.
In a sense you dont have to watch the show but also its another sense that what I said before hand, doing a job as an entertainer.

As for me, more gargantia dance please! =D

Fan service is different as the entire point is pandering to the audience to the detriment of the story telling by emphasizing entertainment over story, I.E. Boobs, sappy romance versus break up, etc. It's when the wants of the audience is emphasized to the point that author no longer wishes to tell a story but to sell a product. It's essentially servicing the fan...."giving them exactly what they want".

Hmm these are interesting things to think about however I feel like I kinda get worried that it might get to a point where any form of arousing art
would be dubbed "Fan Service" and would become a negative notion among people, In my sense im working on a Game with an anime style with a good story for the game but also mixed with the style of the presentation is alot of attractive girls, especially a girl with like "D" or "DD" breasts, its arousing and entertaining as an art but its not the only thing im trying to do.

I was thinking, that it was a technician that provided services in the repair of electric fans.... Thus, people with broken fans would bring them in for service - fan service.

Depends. Is it meant to elicit an action of arousal from said audience? Is it unneeded for the actual plot of the series, aka gratuitous? These are two points to consider.

Berserk has that notorious rape scene, which although featuring nudity, is generally not arousing due to well....lack of consent, and as a catalyst to prepare a certain someone for his or her roaring rampage of revenge.

This isn't to say a good story can't have fan service. Grisaia is highly lauded as a masterpiece among visual novels and this is with the numerous H scenes and nudity spread out. Katawa Shoujo, a popular choice among westerners, has sex scenes.

You know, I take back what I said. Fanservice can be not detrimental to the story, but a general rule of thumb is too much and you're series won't be able to perform serious moments later on. As long as you're trying to write a great story instead of pandering to the lowest common denominator, I.E. selling a product, I'd see no reason why you should avoid fanservice.

There is nothing wrong with a moderate degree of fan service, as long as it does not get in the way of the story.

Excessive fan service, however, can utterly destroy the story.

I agree and more or less disagree at same time.

I really like fan service, to me it brings excitement to the story, but when it comes to anime's with excessive fan serives i don't really think they are worrying about the story just the fan service. When it comes to those anime's its not that the fan service destroyed the story it just didn't really have one to begin with, the point of those anime's is just fan service, so they pretty much might as well be a hentai lol.

I thought Konosuba had way too much fanservice. But Aqua didn't wear 'em...

I personally generally define fan service as unnecessary to advancing the plot while pandering to the arousal of the expected audience. They do it in regular movies as well, for instance Sharon Stone's leg crossing scene in Basic Instinct. However, there is definitely a market for over the top fan service - otherwise the DVD of Plastic Little wouldn't come with a "Jiggle Counter."

Fanservice is content in a work that's included for the sole purpose of pleasing the fans, as opposed to progressing the narrative.

Fan service= having your favorite characters of a certain show/Anime put through situations that have been known to sexualize their actions, or accentuate their character in a way that the market has deemed successful in terms of cute, sexy, or adorable.
