After spending lots of time in Prague in the Czech Republic, I could get around without using any sort of automobile. The tram stopped right in front of my hotel and the Metro got me everywhere. So, after using the amazing public transportation of Prague, it was a real slap in the face when I returned to the US. Why is it that other countries like Germany, Portugal, and the Czech Republic have such great and efficient public transportation while most cities in the US only have buses (see the disaster of public transit in Cheyenne, Wyoming for example) and many other cities have even less? Is it a financial thing, or just US officials being against public transit?

Seriously, nearly every public transit project in smaller cities have been put on hold. Remember when we were going to get high speed rail in Wisconsin? And then it gets cancelled. And at the same time, two lines on the Prague Metro get expanded/extended.

I'm surprised US officials aren't taking this into account.

A lot of things in the US suck, but there must be something right, because people aren't moving out of there.

Part of it is the mainland USA has never been through a war where large parts of it's industrial complex got bombed like Europe did in WW1 and WW2. The wars allowed the countries to rebuild infrastructure that had been damaged or completely eliminated by bombings. When cities are forced to replace the original infrastructure with whatever is the latest thing instead of having to pay to demolish and replace something already in existence that works even if it isn't as efficient, it tends to put those countries ahead of the curve.

US railroads still use the tracks laid for steam engines which had different requirements than today's modern high speed trains and the US historically almost skipped the railroad age because automobiles became available here so shortly after railroad.

The US does not suck just the mass transit. What reason do you think that it is subpar compared to Europe?

Mainland wars do help build infrastructure both because of demand and availability of space. The US has some demand for public transport but people aren't going to give up parts of their property just to expand infrastructure. And just trying to maintain infrastructure is already expensive to the States; and with little tax money to pay for it, there can't be much expansions or additions at all.

the transportation system was pretty much designed to give as much profit to the big oil companies as possible.

The environmentalist have been saying the same thing for a long time.

Not only are trains/subways cheaper than cars by the millions. But they are even ten folds better for the environment. But nope, US would rather not invest in things like the electric car, and say screw public transportation and invest only in cars/trucks that pollute the air.

We have the potential to be the cleanest, most technological, and environmental friendly country in the world yet we don't choose to be. Quite sad really.

The only thing you are correct on is violent crime. Everything else is on par with Europe or better. Our university system is the best in the world theirs a reason millions of foreigners flock to US universities as foreign exchange students. Food totally subjective their is good food everywhere. Health care again we lead the world in new drug development and have some of the best hospitals.

Not like I live in a great country but there are still more positive things about Europe than US.

Electric cars have been around since the dawn of automobiles. See this advertisement from 1902. They were marketed back then as being quieter so they'd be less likely to scare the horses others were driving, easier to start than a gas motor because they didn't have to be cranked - thus better for women to drive, and less stinky exhaust (again marketed toward women). The main reason electric cars never really caught on is twofold. 1) In the early days, men were the primary purchasers of autos and as the electrics were marketed as a "women's car" they didn't want to be seen driving one of those sissy-cars. 2) Because eventually the gas, steam or alcohol powered motors surpassed the distance an electric could go without a recharge or refill. Additionally, the electric batteries were initially kind of fussy and dangerous to deal with because you had to change the acid yourself to recharge them. Plus, gas was so cheap - even cheaper than alcohol, that it was more affordable to go with a gas engine.

The electrics were played with again during the 1970s gas crisis, but due to their limited travel distance once again they didn't really catch on. Additionally most people saw them as slightly glorified golf carts instead of as a "real car" compared to the muscle and pony cars popular at the time. The Citicar was the best known of the electrics then. When gas prices began to creep up again GM actually tested another electric, the EV1 and there's a lot of info out there about that fiasco.

Now we have Tesla... and I'm watching to see if it goes the way of the Tucker. If you aren't familiar with that story about how the big 3 drove the most innovative auto of its day out of business go watch the movie. https://youtu.be/0Y_Bqn-6uko

Anyone who thinks fast food and burgers are all there is to eat in America is very sheltered and ignorant. There are world class restaurants in many US cities. The diversity of our country means a vast array of cuisine to choose from how anyone could say the US has bad food is just stunningly ignorant.
