See, what you do is claim extra deductions on your W2 so you pay less in taxes each paycheck and instead pay the IRS some extra at the end of the year. It's your money, why should the government get to hold on to more than it should?

Sadly doesn't work that way for me because of deductions.

How income taxes work in the US is the government takes money out of your check every payday. The way it is designed to work is that the government takes more than it should every check because reasons. Then when you actually file your taxes for the year early in the next year you find out how much extra the government has taken out and get it back. This is called your tax refund. Things are set up this way so the government takes more than it should and so companies like HR Block can stay in business and make the mad bucks.

People overpay their taxes throughout the year so at the end of the year the government has to give the money the people lent to the government for free back. People act like they are getting free money, but in reality it was theirs to begin with.

Until you have kids then the equation becomes totally fucked up bf has 3 kids gets 7k back paid nowhere close to that in taxes....and I can't get back half of what I paid because I didn't have kids.

In the UK we have income tax but the government just takes what they need.

I never overpay mine. 5 / 10 times I ask for an extension. I always make sure I owe them versus they owe me. It's my money, not theirs.

Buy a new computer because this one barely works. (hardware is broken on the motherboard so some software won't run) and pay my car insurance for the next 6 months.

Sadly, nothing. I fell into the trap of defaulting on my federal student loans some years back and though I have already started the process of getting my loans consolidated and out of default I will lose this years refund just like last years. My paychecks are also garnished but thankfully I'm a server so the most the bastards can usually get from me is about $20 some a week tops. Still sucks though. To all of you younger college students out there be ware, once you default the government doesn't play games
